    Amtraks Texas Chief

Ok, when Amtrak ran it was good. When the Santa Fe ran it, it was superlative.

    Article questions VIA direction

Check link below to trains.com article on Via's "Ocean" slowdown. CN again with "slow orders" because they do not maintain track for higher speeds. In the end, it is the responsibility of Canada's government, regardless of who leads it, to pressure CN...

    Crescent discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024

Wash the train, get the windows clean and if the cars need glass to do it then do it. Also, get the dining cars back on the on the overnight trains that still do not have them. We are not talking "haute cuisine" here. A lot of prep, I think, is done "off train" and it is a matter of cooking a...

    Cardinal discussion

Can't help but point out a connection in the 1950's at Petersburg, VA between the "Powhatan Arrow" and a train name I can't remember on the Atlantic Coast Line. The departure time for the "Powhatan Arrow" and the ACL train were the same and it was a valid connection. How far we have fallen

    Lake Shore Limited discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024

The LSL should always have a Boston sleeper. The train should also have a full "traditional" service Dining Car between NYP & CHI.

Point well take. A noon departure would help from Vancouver and Seattle too. Great Northern had 3 trips each way until about 1959 I believe.

Chicago - St. Louis Lincoln Corridor to begin higher speed running

Two comments. Entering and Leaving St. Louis is pretty slow while Joliet-Chicago could present less of a challenge. Next, is just how many grade crossings are there on this route? I would say lots and they would have to be closed with either over or under passes and fencing. Like the idea...

Dublin to Belfast speed and frequency enhancements

Good news and hope they keep the catering going as the rest of Irish trains may get the 2024 edition of Southern Pacific's "Automatic Buffet Car".

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement RFP discussion 2024 H1

If memory serves me correctly, Stadler is the only current manufacturer of bi-level cars. They did a great job with the "Rocky Mountaineer's" Gold Service" cars. Experience is important as I remember what a mistake it was when Amtrak gave the Superliner orders. Comments?

Dreamstar overnight train between San Francisco and Los Angeles?

Much as I would like to see it, I have to ask the following question. I will grant that both endpoints are pretty liberal areas. Would they sing on to "flight shaming" as so much of Europe has?

Dreamstar overnight train between San Francisco and Los Angeles?

It makes sense to me, but with a "split" at San Jose with a part going to Emeryville.

Container Ship strikes and collapses Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge

Going from here in Sarasota to St. Petersburg, I always check the Skyway Bridge status. If wind gust reach over 45 mph, it closes down and huge detour through Tampa is the only way to get there.

East of Mississippi Long Distance (LD) trains 2024

To this Indianapolis native who took the "South Wind" as a kid and teenager, a Chicago-Florida train with one night out would be a winner. A lot of work to be done, to be sure, but the routing should be CHI-IND-LOU-NAS-ATL-JAX. CHI-ATL "DAY" AND ATL-JAX" overnight.

    VIA Ocean discussion

Look closely at the Renaissance diagrams, some of the rooms have their own showers. The Budd cars ones are a bit larger and I think the cars ride better, but someone else can chime in on that topic. I haven't taken this train in years and I remember us having a Drawing Room in the Park Car and...

    Amtrak Cascades Service discussion

Question for my fellow members in the Pacific Northwest as my Kirkland, WA family can't answer the following. I assume the seats in the Business Class/Cafe Horizon Car from Seattle to Vancouver ar 2 & 1. My question is that since my wife and I are traveling together, are the seats fixed or can...
