Chicago - St. Louis Lincoln Corridor to begin higher speed running

284 miles in 2.5 hours would require an average speed of 114 mph so we would be talking about true high speed rail here comparable to the Japanese Shinkansen, would the current right of way with its grade crossings be able to handle this?

Hi, I was previously known as AmtrakMaineiac but since I have now relocated from Maine to the Lehigh Valley of Pennsylvania I felt I needed a new name. During my days at Lehigh University in the late 1960s my friends and I used to railfan the area and the now fallen flags in the area - the...

Last mile transport between train station and cruise terminal

There is also the factor that cruise lines generally provide an airport to cruise port transfer (for a price) whereas they rarely serve train stations, except maybe Penn Station NYC, do you are on your own if you arrive by train.

    Tampa Union Station

I wonder what happens to that vibrant inviting neighborhood when you plop a ballpark along with the acres of parking required nowadays into it.

    New Member here!

Sounds like a fun trip. The Durango and Silverton is well worth the detour. How are you getting to Durango? If you rent a car, there is an Enterprise office 4 blocks from the station. The drive gets very scenic as you get closer to Durango. The mountain passes north of Silverton are not for the...

B-29 Superfortress WWII bomber set to land in the Lehigh Valley

Probably motor generator sets. When I was in the Air Force Communications Service in the early 1970s we were still using a lot of ground to air radios from the Korean War era such as the GRC-27 that were vacuum tube and use MG sets usually Dynamotors with the motor and generator combined into...

    Empire Service discussion

Looking at the data on Juckins.net for arrivals of train 280 on Sunday for the last 4 months the average delay is 6 minutes. The worst for the last 4 months is 52 minutes. That and one of 27 min were the only significant delays.

B-29 Superfortress WWII bomber set to land in the Lehigh Valley

One of only two that are currently flyable left. This would be cool to see. I will be in the Lehigh Valley that weekend but Unfortunately tied up with my move. B-29 Doc, a Superfortress bomber from WWII, set to land in the Lehigh Valley If I had $1200 burning a hole in my pocket I might...

    California Zephyr discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024

I seem to recall that some of the later broadcasts of this episode on PBS had some sort of disclaimer to the effect of "Amtrak is much better now than what is shown on this video".

Norwalk I-95 fuel tanker fire and closure

My son and daughter in law got caught up in this driving back to RI from PA, taking some back roads and trying to make a U turn got stuck in a ditch. Fortunately some passing Good Samaritans helped push them out. The Merritt and Wilbur Cross Parkways are already congested even without this...

    Texas High Speed Rail

It may be that people can see the advantages of a highway in something they can use so are willing to allow that but perhaps less likely to see the advantages of HSR since there are essentially no examples of one in this country yet.

    California Zephyr discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024

Last night I was watching a YouTube of the BBC "Great Railway Journeys of the World" episode "Coast to Coast". In it the presenter travels on what was then the Westbound San Francisco Zephyr, before it was rerouted onto the D&RGW. At the Denver stop they were washing the windows with some kind...

Should I take the "Amtrak Northeast Corridor" survey?

Arrgh I hate these incessant surveys! Just got one the other day from Home Depot because I bought a putty knife, please rate your new putty knife. What can you say about a putty knife? And I haven't even used it yet. I might consider an Amtrak survey though for a couple of reasons (1) hopefully...
