Future Amtrak Equipment and ADA ideas

Possibly three? A Superliner Capitol/Star combo soon and then maybe a new Chicago - Miami train via Atlanta before we die. Seems like the coming combo is probably going to be single level however. And it would be great if the Meteor did a split at Orlando and served Tampa when this change...

Future Amtrak Equipment and ADA ideas

It's a capacity and experience thing. Superliners are way more efficient and have much more revenue space that helps the bottom line and should lower costs and prices. The Superliner diners and lounges are fantastic cars. This is "experiential" train travel. Superliners are impressive even...

Future Amtrak Equipment and ADA ideas

Yeah, I know but at least as wide as a GG1 pantograph: And then angling down to the side wall like Amtrak proposes: Looks possible at least.

Future Amtrak Equipment and ADA ideas

Actually I was not presenting this as an argument to use these cars as Amtrak's new LD fleet. I was questioning if a totally new car could be built that would offer similar headroom to the current Superliner but be lower in height by utilizing more modern building techniques and materials than...

Future Amtrak Equipment and ADA ideas

Middle photo is a C3: http://www.trainsarefun.com/lirr/C1-C3 Bilevel/Bilevel Cars.htm Also note that the Superliner interior height over the racks goes right up to the ceiling. In the NJT car, there is an enormous amount of space taken up by the lighting and ventilation system. Maybe that...

Future Amtrak Equipment and ADA ideas

I am presenting this just for something to think about. The thread has been a bit slow lately so just some food for thought . . . The below pics show a Superliner, a C3 bilevel and a NJT Bombardier interior. Information I have found states the C3 has a headroom of 6' 5" on each level. The...

Last mile transport between train station and cruise terminal

In Miami and Ft. Lauderdale, Amtrak arrives too late to transfer to the cruise ships anyway. We used to take Amtrak to Miami (Haleigh) and then stay overnight in a hotel near the airport. Several hotels offer a free shuttle to the cruiseports the morning after your overnight stay. That's the...

    Tampa Union Station

The Rays are trying like crazy to get out of there. Tropicana field is considered to be the worst ball park in America by many. I've been there and it was not that horrible but whatever. They are trying to move to the Ybor City section of Tampa nearer to the Amtrak station and the proposed...

    Tampa Union Station

Just spent a little time following the trackage in the area and was real surprised to see that some of the track is still in place near Tropicana Field. For armchair railroad archeologists:

    Tampa Union Station

Took the Star to Tampa a few years ago and the conductor commented that the patronage had gone way up over the last few years. He seemed surprised at the change. We went for a cruise and did take the trolley for the experience. The walk to the trolley was not easy or fun. The next time we...

Connecticut Inland Route and Albany - Boston Corridor (Compass Service)

I can remember watching New York Central passenger trains on the line when I was a kid. It was four tracks wide all the way from Boston to Framingham.

Connecticut Inland Route and Albany - Boston Corridor (Compass Service)

Although the victims of mostly unfair criticism, Talgo's passive tilting equipment would work well along this route. In 1980 I had a honeymoon cross-country rail trip send-off for my bridal party at Boston South Station on the Lake Shore Limited. We were invited into the cab once the train...

Future ideas for Atlantic Coast Service

I think we can assume the new bi-levels will be called "Superliner" 3s.

Future ideas for Atlantic Coast Service

True but I think Amtrak's future long-distance image is going to be the new Superliners for many years to come and at this point if you can "future proof" infrastructure to allow their usage as much as possible throughout the system, it would be very beneficial. There is no question that this...

Future ideas for Atlantic Coast Service

I suppose it's possible to have both like in Tampa.

Future ideas for Atlantic Coast Service

So if they could come up with the equipment, a Superliner Capitol/Star would make so much more sense and be so much more efficient.

    Atlantic Coast (Silver/Palmetto/Carolinian) Service discussion Q4 2023 - 2024

Yeah, we discussed above that it would be possible with a Virginia train.

    Atlantic Coast (Silver/Palmetto/Carolinian) Service discussion Q4 2023 - 2024

So not eliminating the possibility of Superliner equipped trains in the future. Glad the option for future Superliner trains D.C. to Florida or even Chicago to Florida would still be feasible.

    Atlantic Coast (Silver/Palmetto/Carolinian) Service discussion Q4 2023 - 2024

Good point although lugging a bunch of luggage down and up the stairs won't be much fun.

    Atlantic Coast (Silver/Palmetto/Carolinian) Service discussion Q4 2023 - 2024

I don't think that will happen since the NEC corridor trains leave from the upstairs high-level platforms and the through trains use the lower level low-level platforms.
