Andy Byford's plan for Penn Station

Thameslink was not an additional layer when it first opened. When it first opened it took over the existing commuter service to Bedford. Furthermore, the reconstruction of St Pancras only added platforms for HS1 services - the number of platforms remained at 6 for Thameslink and...

Andy Byford's plan for Penn Station

Thameslink no longer has a King's Cross station and when it opened no new platforms were constructed for it.

Andy Byford's plan for Penn Station

That the report writes absolute nonsense about Thameslink is not a good sign!

    Texas High Speed Rail

I'm not sure that would have stopped litigation!

    Re-nationalisation of British Rail

In full, almost certainly not. However with private funding and a cut-back scheme that only bypasses the major bottlenecks, perhaps.

    Re-nationalisation of British Rail

Labour have stated they have no plans to interfere with open access operators (or freight, which will remain private). Well, that's generally considered the bare minimum in Europe!

    Re-nationalisation of British Rail

The Open Access operators will not be directly affected by this. Since LNER is already government-owned and operated, I can't see there being much difference.

    California HSR

Something that most people have probably missed is this recent planning document for the Merced station that includes the proposed timetables for the San Joaquins/ACE connecting trains: https://cdn.sjjpa.com/wp-content/uploads/20240716202402/App2.0-3_MITC-Ridership-Memo.pdf

    Public ownership of railroads

You don't remember what the studies were, or what mechanism they propose. The US government pays large subsidies to railroads for capital projects. Plus there's the Railway Labor Act...

    Public ownership of railroads

So you don't remember whether or not the studies investigated the cause of the differences and whether or not they could be placed on private control?

    Public ownership of railroads

I have not heard of any studies comparing the performance of US railroads between WW1 and WW2.

Britain's Royal Mail to stop carrying mail by rail

It seems to be more complicated than that - according to Royal Mail, they're just ending the use of the mail-only EMUs they own, and will continue to send mail by regular freight trains in the future.

North East Corridor (NEC) speeds, new stations and state of repair

Article yesterday from the New York Magazine's subsidiary Curbed highly critical of the state of electrification on the NEC: https://www.curbed.com/article/amtrak-northeast-corridor-power-supply-catenary-failing.html

    Public ownership of railroads

On the subject of freight, public ownership of infrastructure and private operation of freight trains is generally considered to have worked well in Europe. Such a system could have positive effects in the US, as it would greatly increase competition.

    Texas High Speed Rail

Worth mentioning that the Texas GOP's 2024 platform includes this: Amtrak/Texas Central have some steep political barriers to climb.

    Texas High Speed Rail

I was going to say that seems the most likely to me.

History of the creation of Railpax which became Amtrak

Has anyone managed to download the McKinsey report linked in the article? It isn't working for me.
