You can read the full story from the Washington Post.Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson said Friday he is not committed to staying in his job past February and is entertaining offers to return to the private sector.
This is technically not Amtrak news, since Tommy Thompson is HHS Secretary. That said Tommy, a Republican, has been one of Amtrak's most ardent supporters over the years. For several years he served on the board of Amtrak and was president of the board until he took his current job. In fact one of the new P42 engines was named in his honor, for his dedication and work for Amtrak.
While we don't hear much news on the political infighting within the President's cabinet, one has to believe that Tommy continues to fight for Amtrak against OMB Director Mitch Daniels and other anti-Amtrak influences. Therefore one has to question if he does step down next year, what impact this could have on a seemingly anti-Amtrak White House. For that matter, I wonder if the administrations current approach to Amtrak might even figure into his decision. He may feel that he can do more for Amtrak by being in the public spotlight again, something he currently can’t do.
