Modified service due to Tropical Storm Debby
August 04, 2024 09:00 PM

For the safety of Amtrak customers and employees, due to forecasted inclement weather, select trains will operate a modified schedule with no alternate transportation as follows:

Tuesday, August 6 - Wednesday, August 7

Palmetto Service:
  • Train 89 will operate between New York & Washington
  • Train 90 will operate between Washington & New York
Tuesday, August 6

Silver Star Service:
  • Train 92 will operate between Miami & Jacksonville
  • Train 91 will operate between Jacksonville & Miami
Silver Meteor Service:
  • Train 98 will operate between Miami & Jacksonville
  • Train 97 will operate between Jacksonville & Miami
Auto Train Service:
  • Train 52 is canceled in its entirety
  • Train 53 is canceled in its entirety

Debby is moving very slowly up the east coast. Probably too early to tell but what if its track around the NY area duplicates Sandy. Possibility of too much rain in unlikely event of repeating Sandy and all its rain.?

Around the NY Tristate region low probability of Tropical Storm force winds. The system itself will most likely be just a Depression. But copious amount of rain amounting to 4"-8" possible. Friday onward it is projected to be a fast moving system as it is captured by the jet stream and a trough and is whisked away. That interaction will also cause if to strengthen again into an extra tropical storm off the shore of Maine.

It is a good idea to take a look at the NHC site and a site like tropicaltidbits to see the model projections before speculating. Usually within five days completely random deviations do not happen, specially in general path. Strengths are a different matter specially when the system is an extra tropical storm off the coast of Maine heading over Noca Scotia at a fast clip.

Debby has now passed us here in Florida, but the Carolinas are getting quite the rain. We just got our power back on after 18 hours of it being off.

The damage this storm is causing cannot be understated. It is understandable that the Silvers would terminate before Georgia. At the rate Debby is moving, it is still uncertain when they can resume. I'm sure some track inspection may be needed before traffic on those rails continues.

Does this mean the Silver Meteor 97 is ONLY operating between there? I was trying to get a train from New York Penn tomorrow down to Orlando and it says it Silver Meteor 97...

I caught the southbound Silver Star yesterday morning as it passed the Longwood Sunrail station heading to Winter Park, as I waited for my uncle to pick me up. Here is a video from a cellphone, not the best video I've done but it's something. Despite the train running between Jacksonville and Miami, there was a decent amount of passengers onboard from what I was able to see.
