Via has a fare where a companion can travel for free with a person who needs assistance as long as a doctor signs off on it. Has any one had any personal experiences with this?

On one trip I took on the Canadian, there were 2 Passengers that had companions traveling with them, 1 Blind person and another that used a walker to get around.

The crew were very helpful to them. I am not sure what is required to qualify, but sure a call to a VIA agent will get you the requirements.

A friend of mine is autistic and VIA recognizes his need to have a support person travelling with him. The way I understand him, VIA will charge what a passenger travelling alone would pay and then provides accommodation for the second passenger without any additional charge (e.g., you pay for a Cabin for 1 and you get assigned together with your support person into a Cabin for 2). However, I assume that all such bookings need to be made over the phone and that VIA may request some medical evidence confirming the dependence on a support person…
