New traveler's checked baggage question

Hello,

This is my first time booking an Amtrak trip and I have some questions regarding checked baggage:

My one-way trip will be in December, and the route is Kansas City to Miami with coach seating, with a 3hr transfer-connection in Chicago Union Station. The two trains are Southwest Chief (from KCY to CHI) and the Floridian (CHI to MIA). I know KC's station allows checked baggage, as does Miami's (and both segments of my trip list checked baggage under amenities on my itinerary), but I don't know how checked baggage will work at the transfer point in Chicago, so:

Most of my baggage can be brought as a carry-on, but I have an item that, to my knowledge, can only be transported as checked baggage on the same train I'm on. How will the transfer at CHI work? Is my checked bag automatically transferred to the second train by staff? Do I have to get my bag myself and check it again (and where would I pick up my bag)? If either is possible, which is recommended?

I'm sure this will all work out fine, but I'd rather be thorough and ask questions. Any answers are welcome and appreciated.

Your checked baggage will be transferred at Chicago. You will not need to transfer it yourself.

Your checked bag will be transferred by Amtrak at Chicago, just like checked bags are by airlines when changing planes.

You give your bag to the agent at Kansas City, show them your ticket, they'll tag it MIA and take it. That's that.

It is, in fact, usually a very bad idea to "short check" your bags only to the transfer point. Your train may be so late you do not have time to retrieve it, much less recheck it (45-60 minute cut off before departure, depending on the station). You may be faced with the choice of missing your train or leaving your bag marooned if you try it.

Don’t lose your baggage check receipt. Unlike the airlines, Amtrak actually checks these at most destinations.

That’s a good thing, helps prevent someone mistakenly claiming someone else’s similar bag.
Airline baggage checks are individually numbered, as well as linked to your Passenger Name Record (reservation), so if you lose your claim check, they can easily look it up.

I would point out that if you check in and have it routed for your final destination, there is no specific requirement for Amtrak to have it travel on the same trains that you'll travel on. If you check in early, your bags could theoretically go on an earlier train, although I don't believe that would necessarily apply to your route since there's no other train with baggage service at KCY.

If they let you check in really early, it could go on a previous train and your bags arrive well before you do.

There really is no alternate direct route KCY-MIA than SW Chief-Floridian. Unless specifically marked, bags will go by the shortest and most direct route. The bag would almost certainly go that way even if the passenger went by way of, say, New York. I went NYP-SEA once using a Regional-29-3-14. My bag went direct, 49-7, arriving the day before I did.

You'd have to check your bags more than 24 hours in advance for it to go on a different train from KCY, since the only train with baggage would be the previous day's 4. Most stations allow bags to be checked up to 24 hours in advance, but no more than that.

OP said item being checked "can only be transported as checked baggage on the same train I'm on." I interpret that as being a restricted item, such as a firearm. If Amtrak observes its own policies, it will travel on the same trains as the passenger.
