NEC Service Disruptions 12/22-12/24/2024

Yesterday there was an hourslong disruption of service between NYP and PHL due to catenary issues. Delays of up to 7 hours were encountered, resulting in cascading delays up and down the East coast. These delays disrupted service today as crew and equipment turns were badly misaligned. There was further disruption due to signal failures between CP ZOO and CP HOLMES, leading to delays of up to 40 additional minutes. This will likely impact service tomorrow, Christmas Eve.

This was on the National News tonight! Lots of NYP and Amtrak Video in the Stories!

Since Amtrak seems to be short of T&E crew is it taking some Regionals and splitting them up to make longer regionals or is that too difficult? Acelas apparently took a big hit maybe due to their less capacity?

Catenary improvements between NYP and WAS are the biggest priority on the Northeast Corridor IMO.

Well, there are the 100+ yr old tunnels that need to be replaced, and a few 100+ yr old bridges, too.

I don’t think there is a push to do that. The 9-10 car range seems to be a practical limit. I also don’t think the Northeast Corridor crew shortages are nearly as bad as the rest of the country. Amtrak is absolutely raiding SEPTA for T&E crews and is likely doing the same to other agencies.
