    Airo - Amfleet I replacement Siemens Inter City Trainsets (ICT) (2021 - 1Q 2024)

Back on the Airo track, the lack of planning for food storage and seat configuration has me wondering just how far the procurement people think these trainsets will travel. Boston to Roanoke or Newport News is a long trip to be in a thinly padded, non-reclining seat. Those are 14 hour trips. If...

    Airo - Amfleet I replacement Siemens Inter City Trainsets (ICT) (2021 - 1Q 2024)

Oh, no, closet is a Viewliner I term. We call them linen rooms on the Viewliner IIs. 🤣

Winter storm related delays and cancellations Winter 2022-2023

I believe Amtrak's compensation will only extend to the train's delay, not any other expenses. Travel insurance would pick up the tab for other expenses incurred or reservations lost due to a late train/plane/bus, etc. Check if your credit card has any trip delay insurance built-in when...

    Auto Train discussion

Disregarding the fact that Amtrak has literally zero extra equipment available, there isn't enough room in Lorton or Sanford to practically park an extra 30 Superliners and 60 carriers. If you do have a third set available, there is a 50% chance it will be on the wrong end when needed. If that...

Winter Park (Colorado) Express is back

Rumor is the train will be equipped with single level equipment, perhaps Amfleet Is, this year. That'll be fun with all those skis.

    Timely Ticket scanning

You are referring to the Sweep button. I don't think it actually affects no show processing. I've seen no shows process even when I've not used the sweep function. The delays in scanning tickets are seeing are more likely related to short staffing.

    Refund for canceled train

I'm not aware of any time limits to request a refund for a canceled train. That said, waiting two months to make the requested phone call is a bit long. Most likely the regular agent you spoke with is unable to process the refund due to the elapsed time. It's likely the reservation is no...

    Virginia Service expansion

I should think that regardless of track being there or not, buying the underlying property from the railroad significantly reduces that railroad's property tax bill. They like that sort of thing.

    Amtrak delays

That was exactly the problem. The switch failed and the crew attempted to handle the switch manually. It still would not lock into position properly. They had to wait for a signal maintainer to arrive and literally fix the switch. Been there, done that.

    Amtrak Car Numbers

The Viewliner IIs also have bright brake indicator lights on the side, green for brakes released and yellow for brakes or hand brake applied. They're pretty bright and an excellent indicator of Viewliner type. There are also red door lights above the vestibules, but they're only useful when the...

Hurricane Ian 2022 (effects on Amtrak)

Glad they've loaded the inventory now. When I checked Amtrak.com it showed Canceled for every trip I search from WAS to ORL or TPA. Wouldn't have been the first time bustitution was only provided for existing reservations.

Please note what I wrote in my previous message about this exactly sitation:

Hurricane Ian 2022 (effects on Amtrak)

Cancellations south of Jacksonville have been extended. Now expecting 91 and 97 to resume the full route with trains originating in NYP on October 11. 92 and 98 showing resuming from Miami on October 12. I'd say there is a good probability of further cancellations. It appears this all hinges...

Hurricane Ian 2022 (effects on Amtrak)

Silver Meteor is now canceled in its entirety through October 6. Silver Star is planned to resume Oct 2 NYP-JAX. Canceled JAX-MIA through October 6.

Saluki 8/7/22 Superliner sleepers as Axle counts

I believe "track circuits" here is being used as a generic term. There are basically two types of grade crossing signals. Fixed warning and constant warning. Each uses a track circuit to detect a train. The fixed warning crossings are a fixed length from the crossing. Whenever a train enters...

    Pet Peeves

I generally find deaf and hard of hearing passengers stay quite aware of where the train is vs. where they want to go and my comments were not directed at them. When I'm aware they are on my train, they receive all updates face-to-face and I make sure to communicate in a way they can understand...

Can 15-16 year olds book solo travel on long distance trains?

The time limits apply to the train’s scheduled departure and arrival times. Once an unaccompanied minor is onboard, regardless of delay, they should be carried to their ticketed destination.

Can 15-16 year olds book solo travel on long distance trains?

The unaccompanied minor policy is the same across all Amtrak services with no distinction between Northeast Corridor, state-supported or long distance trains. If they are under 16 and traveling on the Pacific Surfliner without an adult it's just not getting caught by the conductors. When a...

    Pet Peeves

Comprehension is one of the other fundamental pillars of transportation. An announcement could be made on a clear and functional PA by someone with excellent diction and delivery, but if there is no comprehension (or attention) on the receiving end, then we still have a communication breakdown...

Link to Amtrak COVID check not working

The pre-trip COVID thing has ended. The website no longer works and conductor devices no longer show an alert for the many, many people who didn't complete the survey before traveling anyway. Less tapping to lift a ticket now. Yay!
