    Sleeper accommodation discussion

One potential disadvantage of bedroom A for lighter sleepers is that it’s on the far end of the car. I’ve noticed i tend to get the best sleep when I’m in a room towards the middle and away from the trucks - for both Viewliners and Superliners.

    Capitol Limited discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024

Were there any misconnects from western trains yesterday? I have seen them throw on a sightseer just to provide a few more seats to accommodate misconnects - basically acting as a coach.

Alan Shaw NS CEO Proxy fight

Interesting situation brewing in relation to Norfolk Southern. They are in the midst of a revolt by an activist group of shareholders. Regulators have praised CEO Shaw’s response to the East Palestine incident and safety culture changes which has reduced the number of derailments. The concern of...

Amtrak Dining and Cafe Service discussion 2024 H1

Usually you'll get a real glass at dinner for beer or other alcoholic beverages too. For the soft drinks its a little bit less consistent - I have gotten glasses before when I get my sparkling water but it's often plastic as well. I have gotten real silverware and glasses at the other meals on...

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022 - 2024Q1)

Amtrak OIG has their own processes and can get information directly from management - and has, appropriately, launched their own audit and review of the LD procurement. Given the size and vast scope (this will be the biggest US rolling stock order in quite some time) this definitely needs to...

    Northeast Regional discussion 2022-2024 H1

Do the seats you're referring to allow the passenger to face the direction they'd like and turn them at will or is it just for the crew to turn them at turnaround points?

Amtrak IG Report on the lack of effective management of parts inventory

A very timely and important report by the IG. Part availability and lead times are a major problem in many sectors at the moment. So it's important for Amtrak's own internal processes to not further exasperate the situation. I hope they will keep on management about this critical area and ensure...

And I just answered my own question with this photo.

    Northeast Regional discussion 2022-2024 H1

You know when you put it that way that is a good point that's hard to refute. You know the one thing I just thought of - has anyone seen if they are doing the half each direction thing on the new Acela or are they going to be flipping seats like the current cars?

I guess another benefit with getting all the Amfleet 1s in the same configuration it could save a little bit of time on swapping a car out if you are pulling from a pool where the trains normally run the other way (like the Hartford Line, Keystones, etc). Given the inevitability of this...

    Amtrak Phase VII livery discussion

Apparently there is a large plan to implement Amtrak's new phase VII design on a lot of the equipment which they just unveiled a P42 painted that way - so all the Viewliners may end up eventually getting painted the same way.

I would assume so but don’t know 100%.

Effect on Amtrak of Federal shutdown

Yes. Auto Train is revenue positive anyway so shouldn’t have any issues there.

Preferential treatment for California Zephyr w/American View (10004)?

I do not believe the American View has any sleeping accommodations - so the execs are likely using roomettes in the transition sleeper. The senior exec probably got dibs on the one bedroom in the car on the lower level.

Amtrak Dining and Cafe Service discussion 2024 H1

I’m ok with the brownie and butter cake lunch as a little bit lighter choice than the full fledged cakes they use at dinner I actually love the butter cake - but maybe mix it up a bit and change it periodically. This seemed to be timed around when they opened things up to coach and expanded to...

VIA Rail Long Distance (LD) and Inter-Regional fleet replacement

Given the relatively small potatoes nature of VIA's requirements their best bet as far as economies of scale is probably to piggy back on Amtrak's LD procurement if the efforts are compatible - at least on the basics - they'll obviously have their own specifications on the soft goods and products.

Amtrak Dining and Cafe Service discussion 2024 H1

They never permanently moved away from it on Acela however and retained their stock of real dishware as the covid cutbacks weren't intended to be permanent. On LD trains they moved away from china quite a few years ago now and sold and disposed of all of their stock well before the pandemic...

Amtrak Dining and Cafe Service discussion 2024 H1

LD trains do have silverware and glassware. There was originally talk of them ordering china when traditional dining returned, whether they ceased that plan or if its just taken them forever to receive an order I do not know. As for Acela, its an entirely different product, service format that's...

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022 - 2024Q1)

Interesting take and his concerns about bridging the gap are of course very relevant. However I have mixed feelings about the proposed contingencies - particularly which seems to be his (and others) preferred alternative which is redirecting the focus to a heavy rebuild/life extension of the...

Sanford is a great town. I like Hollerbachs.
