New dining options (flex dining) effective October 1, 2019

On the Capitol Limited. I was prepared to be disappointed, but you know what? I don’t hate this, really. Pros-eat whenever you want. No need to decide hours early what time later you will want. When you’re ready-you go. A free drink was a nice touch, as I was drinking anyway. Saved me a few...

"Exciting" new contest re Food Delivery (to sleeper passengers) Design

Because sleeping car attendants would deliver just an handful of meals. This kinda leads me to think, soon, they’ll be serving ALL meals in the sleeper, which will take a bit more work and ingenuity.....because the diners are coming off completely. It’s the only thing that makes sense.

New dining options (flex dining) effective October 1, 2019

Am in Chicago for a meeting, was supposed to fly home tomorrow night, but on a whim, decided to take the train back home to Alabama and booked a bedroom on the Capitol Limited and Crescent. Honestly not too broken up over Eastern train dining, I rarely used the diner other than for breakfast...

Will Gov Shutdown bring more riders to Amtrak?

This may come as a surprise, but the news often works very hard to find a problem to film. I fly almost every week multiple times, and have yet to experience anything out of the ordinary. As it goes on, I expect it will certainly start to have an impact, but so far, I have not seen anything...

Amtrak's New "Fresh Choices" Dining on CL & LSL

Haven't been on either train yet since this started, but I kinda dig it. Would rather have a lighter option in room, vs the standard heavy meal on this short train. Makes sense to me. Typically for an evening departure I've already eaten better before getting on board, and skip dinner anyway...

    Boarding Acela in WAS

Thanks, yes, I would prefer a single if possible. I had read that Acela was now offering reserved seats, and you could pick ahead of time, but not on my train apparently. Guess that's only on certain trains.

    Boarding Acela in WAS

Thanks, ok, will go to Club Acela then. I am in first class, so might as well utilize it. Thanks!

Ferries, Ferries, and still more Ferries

It's already been mentioned back on a 2013 post, but my favorite Ferry is the SS Badger across Lake Michigan. Have taken it several times now, it's a nice crossing. Took a loop around the Great Lakes a few years back, and even took the bike for a boat ride!

    Boarding Acela in WAS

Leaving a conference in WAS next week to shoot up to NYP for a meeting before taking the Crescent back to BHM. Never been on an Acela train before, I try and avoid the Northeast, so this will largely be a first. Do they early board FC from the Club Acela, or would it be best to just go to the...

    Meals on long distance routes.

Me either. All three trains I've been on this week used real eggs. The Crescent, Capitol Limited, and the SW Chief. Breakfast (and really all) meals seem to be much better. The chilaquillea, steamed mussels, quesadilla, and even the Biryani are all nice changes from the regular endless scrambled...

Breakfast on the Crescent out of NOL?

Silly question-youre in New Orleans??? Why not get a good breakfast before boarding? Even cafe a lait and biegniegts is usually a step above anything on board. To be fair dining car fare has improved but not to the point I'lol go there before eating real food in a city known for its amazing eats.

    Meals on long distance routes.

Actually I think it is. It's much better now than it was just a year or two ago, I used to actively avoid the dining car most of the time. Even free/included, was overpriced if it's not good. This trip however unnoticed a marked improvement, both on the Creacent, and the Capitol Limited. Other...

    Single-level baggage cars

Yes, you may all be correct, it's a possibility. But that would require an employee to get up out of the cafe car table and take a walk, and we both know that's just not going to happen.....besides, I was just wandering around, no sign, and not locked.....how was I to know any better? thanks for...

If Amtrak were to remove 1 onboard amenity from LD trains, which one?

Relax, my SCA comment was tongue in cheek. Of course they need them, it would be pandemonium on board without them. I know, I've seen it. (I assume there was an SCA somewhere on the train, but damn sure wasn't in the car....) And as to the coffee and juice-Do they still do juice? My last trip...

    amtrak humor

Not gonna cut it. Good humor, usually starts with at least a basis of truth to be relatable!

    Meals on long distance routes.

I am no expert, but I am pretty sure they crack the eggs on board, both on Western and Eastern trains-I've noticed some are more scrambled than others, with some white still around, which is how I like them. My eggs this morning were great, light and fluffy, and clearly hand scrambled, not from...

    Single-level baggage cars

The baggage car on the rear of the Crescent, was pretty empty.....the whole way. I would think the half baggage/dorm cars would be much better utilized. Maybe its more full at other times. Heck, they could turn half the business class car into a baggage car, it only had 4-8 people it in the...

    Amtrak live map still available?

True-However, having served for quite a few years in, and been fairly well trained in security, anti-terrorism, and rail security, I can think of quite a few ways this information would be extremely beneficial for someone with bad intentions, While you're correct, in that there are so many other...

    Amtrak live map still available?

It's live enough for my purposes. Frankly, with the security risk of advertising where trains are and how fast they're traveling at any given moment, I'm surprised they share it at all.
