Upgrade to bedroom on TE #422

Even as a single traveler often, I go for the bedroom when it's not terribly different in price. I greatly prefer them. I will even check prices of the family room or H room right before departure, and swap to one of those if the price drops for it. I like the space.

I may be crazy, but I'm going to take 3 trains across country

Wow-THAT is hard core. I used to do overnight coach trips when I was young, in the service, after sleeping on the ground, a coach seat wasn't that bad....But today? I need a room for anything over 4 hours, especially at night!

I may be crazy, but I'm going to take 3 trains across country

Thanks all. I'm actually quite familiar with each of the routes, I've taken all three at lease half a dozen times over the years, individually. I just have never had the time to do more than one at a time. And I've had so much Giordanos, I think I'll probably pass, if the train is on time. It is...

I may be crazy, but I'm going to take 3 trains across country

I may be crazy. I'm no stranger to overnight train travel, I do it 3-4 times a year, but to date, I have only done two consecutive nights on board. On a whim, I just priced a trip from Birmingham AL, to LA. I already have airline tickets, but January is usually a little slow for me. I have to be...

NS Derailment near Anniston, AL (5/19)

And that, is why I rented a car, and drove the rest of the way to Birmingham, when they kicked us all off in Atlanta today.......

NS Derailment near Anniston, AL (5/19)

Lol. Don't worry, I think you'look be safe. This is the last time I bother with a train for a very long while. Just not worth the headache. I have some credit that expires in a year or so, may use that, but I'm sticking with flying from now on. Do stil want to ride the Canadian, -and that new...

National Dining Car Specials/New Menus (April '17)

They had to swap the diner out, on 19 with the one that arrived on 20, so left NY 4+ hours late. The shrimp and steak was good, better than I expected. No rolls or salad though. Breakfast was decent too, had the omlette grits and bacon. The new croissants aren't quite as good as the old ones but...

NS Derailment near Anniston, AL (5/19)

Yeah-I am on 19 now, left NYP over 4 hours late yesterday, (still are) and everyone gets off in ATL. Guess I'll Uber over to the airport and get a rental there and drive to Birmingham. I'm batting about .600 over the past couple years. I think this is the 4th trip that cancelled, didn't make it...

    Traxx Restaurant

I like it. Usually eat there before leaving LAX on the Sunset. Good food, and a nice place to have a beer or wine, while waiting rather than cram into the upstairs lounge, the green chili posole is good, usually though I get the muscles over couscous. Is it great? No, it's good though, and I...

    Business Amenities on Heartland Flyer?

Another tip-Get to the station early. They generally just trickle board, rather than one mad rush 10 minutes to departure, and you can go to the platform anytime in FTW. I recommend the right hand side of the train, the sun will be on the left going North, however the best scenery, is on the...

    Nearby liquor store in LA

No problem, just took Uber instead of the Fly Away bus and asked him to stop. And yes, Phillippes is good too, but we decided to eat at Traxx instead. Love the food there, the steamed mussels over couscous in spicy tomato broth is terrific. Also had the green chili posole which was also...

    Nearby liquor store in LA

Sorry to bring back an old topic but asking the same question. Does that convenience store in LAUPT not sell wine and liquor? Transferring from LAC was going to take the shuttle bus, but might Uber to stop at a liquor store if nothing available at the station or very near. Anything change I'm 2...

    Northeast Snowstorm

Yeah. Looks like it. Cutting our losses, and doing that. We fly to LA tomorrow, and head home to OKC on the Eagle and Flyer. Was looking forward to the Lakeshore, have not been on that full route, but didn't want to get caught up in the mess. So. Another trip on the Eagle. Just a fun run anyway...

So, been working all day and haven't been keeping up-Currently in Jacksonville with my son, he wanted to take a train trip on spring break. CONO Sleeper Bucket Puzzle

I guess I thought his question is why his ratio is smaller. Why the fares are less of course, is due to demand, transit time/meals involved, and market willingness to pay I suppose.

advice on taking beer on long distance routes

Ice is not as easy to get as it used to be. I liked it when they would leave a cooler full out to use as needed but hats over, supposedly due to FDA requirements. Some attendants have no problem getting me ice, others suggested I go to the diner to get it myself, which the diner crew seems to...

Look at the numbers-the overall price differential is much smaller, so the spread will be as well.

advice on taking beer on long distance routes

I have found, a bag cooler is just the thing. It folds up small, yet can easily hold a 12 pack. I t put it on top of my clothes in my carry on folded and empty. Beer I bring warm, then get ice on board. When done bag folds back up for easy carry when I get off. Perfect solution.
