New Gulf Coast service (New Orleans - Mobile and Baton Rouge)

I have no doubt additional/lengthened sidings will be built (at Amtrak's cost) in strategic locations to park passenger trains while they watch freight trains go by.

Suggestion for Amtrak winter vacation spot?

There is the Salish Lodge east of Seattle (of Twin Peaks fame as the Great Northern Hotel.) The NW Railway Museum is just up the road in North Bend. Then again, if you are a Stephen King fan (or not) there is the Stanley Hotel northwest of Denver that was the basis of the Overlook Hotel in his...

    Retiree pass

If I remember correctly for those hired at BN after Amtrak took over in 1971 it was a 20% discount for travel. Tickets had to be purchased no earlier than 24 hours before travel to get the discount.

    Retiree pass

Amtrak passes were issued to BNSF freight employees hired until 1980. ( I hired on in 1979 and immediately requested one.) I learned in 2017 Amtrak cancelled all passes a year earlier in 2016. Neither BNSF/Amtrak ever notified me until I tried to use it.

There was no layover track built. It was simply parked in the Pine Street yard in Bellingham. (2006) This was the cleaning facility (the dirt strip) and equipment.
