Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement RFP discussion H1 2024

Electronic Variable Neutral Density is different and decently mature. At this point it is in quite a bit of camera equipment

Stadler just build 10 cars for RM that feature elevators

Siemens Caltrans/IDOT Venture design, engineering, testing and delivery (2012-1Q 2024)

These are paint We will see how the F59phi get painted post rebuild I'm doubtful of that cafes would be 5+ years away and for the cost we could likely get 1-2 more sets of equipment which is far more important. Really we need 4-5 more to hold the state over on rolling stock until Caltrans and...

Caltrain looking at Battery Electric MU for Gilroy Service

Not really, we are seeing amtrak CA do a F59phi rebuild again of at least 13 units if not more And those won't quite meet T4 with renewable diesel

Caltrain looking at Battery Electric MU for Gilroy Service

They don't rule them out, CARB just won't fund them and they'll be limited to serving until 2035 if the current plan stands.

VIA Rail Long Distance (LD) and Inter-Regional fleet replacement

I wasn't saying bi level but doing a more wrap around window for coach, it seems like the kind of thing you'd need to use in a lounge or cafe/dinner

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022 - 2024Q1)

the superliner II should have a decent amount of life left but the I are 10-20 years older That would leave 55 sleepers, 25 sightseers, 38 coaches, 30 dinners and 47 transition sleepers. in late 2021 nearly all those cars were active and not damaged What they'd have is some very sleeper heavy...

VIA Rail Long Distance (LD) and Inter-Regional fleet replacement

I suspect making all coaches that way would be a struggle as to have any attempt of darking out the train at night and storing luggage above means you'd need a weird setup

VIA Rail Long Distance (LD) and Inter-Regional fleet replacement

Yeah I assume it can fit plate F which would mean cutting a foot off the car.

VIA Rail Long Distance (LD) and Inter-Regional fleet replacement

Stadler could easily enough, they've done sleeper FLIRTS and coaches before as well as a few different window styles and a NA compatible design. The Bi levels they made for RM were built in Europe, I suspect their 18ft2in height and 89.75ft long length might present a minor issue. We don't know...

VIA Rail Long Distance (LD) and Inter-Regional fleet replacement

Because at this point there are so many orders for Siemens if you want their stuff its going to be a wait. And if you rush and order the cars before design is done you get the mistake Amtrak made with airo cafe cars which pushed the project back 6 months and cost nearly 50M.

VIA Rail Long Distance (LD) and Inter-Regional fleet replacement

I'll note for some of the latest rebuilds the cars are stripped down to the frame and heavily modified Like I'm not sure how much is even original

VIA Rail Long Distance (LD) and Inter-Regional fleet replacement

Yes if they don't insist on doing their own thing it should be possible to get more than enough cars by then. The new Stadler cars took 4 years from order to delivery.

    Brightline Trains West!

ETCS is looking like it will be chosen by Canada, it is at least being used for GO. We will see it working for North American sized freights soon. The I-ETMS relying on GPS make it far worse with major shortcomings. Its a barley functional system that pretty often dies. Had we gone pulse code...

FRA Long Distance Service Study discussion

I would get mid 2030s because of rolling stock and needing congress to agree but 2040s, is amtrak really that short staffed that they'll finish connect US stuff and then move onto LD

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022 - 2024Q1)

Amtrak is going to need to find a way to get more crews, Amtrak should be assuming 1-2 western LD sets a year will get badly damaged as thats been the trend for a long time. Siemens says cars are 5+ years out so unless someone else can spool up a whole production line faster I don't see us...
