    Using Japan Rail (JR) questions

I know nothing of Japanese rail, but American rail tend to use hot box detection to find hot bearings getting ready to fail. Temperature based not audible as far as I know. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hot_box While on the LSL this summer, I did hear a flat spot or spalling spot somewhere in...

The mention of TV Dinners with the Texas Eaglette brings to mind the ZZ Top song by the same name: TV Dinners

Future Amtrak Equipment and ADA ideas

I missed the Slumbercoach era. What are differences between this pod/aircraft idea or the Russian sleeper carriage and a what a modernized slumbercoach could be?

London to Calcutta by Bus, 50 days

Oh, that was in the story: https://bustolondon.in/ "Now more than forty years later, an India-based travel operator Adventures Overland announced a bus service from New Delhi to London and back, covering 20,000 km and travelling through 18 countries in 70 days. The service was supposed to start...

More Greyhound cutbacks and comparison with airlines

Those Shusters sound like they could be shiesters 😀 I visited the area 7 years ago to walk on the retired interstate and go into the tunnels. It is very surreal to walk on an interstate and the weeds are growing in the cracks and the shoulders are overgrown with shrubs/trees as far as one...

    What should Amtrak change?

We had a gentleman take our B bedroom on a VL1 at boarding. We asked the sleeper attendant to ask them to help them check their ticket. Turns out they misread the 8 as a B and moved to their room.

Amtrak Cafe service, vending machines etc. discussion

Does anyone remember trying the Automat car on the Pere Marquette? I watched the TCM movie Automat I had recorded that made me think I have read threads on here about the SP Automat car but I don’t find the Amtrak Automat discussed much. Amtrak’s Automat 8601 appeared to be a heritage UP car...

Lockheed L-1049 Constellation and other propeller planes of mid-20th century

Oh this part helped, I understand what you are saying now! Thanks! I use ForeFlight for flight planning single engine land, and if you put a plan in it is using the forecast winds at each altitude for heading, computing fuel used, and time in flight, etc. It makes it so easy you get rusty...

AGR Credit Card change (October 2022)

I am a non-Amtrak AGR card customer of FNBO since I was a teenager. They gave me my first card when the credit card compnaies used to target university students heavily. Do they still do that, I don't know (I should)? I am not sure what data they are using for the catagorization, but they do...

Lockheed L-1049 Constellation and other propeller planes of mid-20th century

I am curious how this works? At flight idle, is that enough thrust to keep the Indicated Air Speed (not Ground Speed) high enough not to stall? Or, are their periods of updrafts as well in the Jet that allows one to nose down/idle throttle? Or something else I don't know about?

Was it easier to change/check spark plugs only on a R-4360 as compared to a R-3350? :)

Cost of taking trains vs cost of taking other modes in the U.S.

How are some getting tickets 12 months in advance? I could only get 11 months to the day.

Nice Ballanca! I have seen the two Connies at Pima Air and Space Museum next to Davis Monthan. One of them was also one of Eisenhower‘s. https://pimaair.org/museum-aircraft/lockheed-l-049/ https://pimaair.org/museum-aircraft/lockheed-vc-121a/

    Union Pacific Heritage Donation Special

Unfortunately receiving reports it used IAIS out of Council Bluffs and not UP, so its not going to go within view of my work window. :( Around Atlantic, IA now, supposedly.

    Union Pacific Heritage Donation Special

"Union Pacific will be delivering a small portion of its heritage fleet that was donated to non-profit Railroading Heritage of Midwest America (RRHMA) in November. The donated equipment, which includes Challenger No. 3985, TTT-6 No. 5511, Centennial No. 6936 and several passenger rail cars, will...

The Capelis XC-12 had quite an interesting biplane tri tail too. As seen in Flying Tigers and Five Came Back.

CONO, Illini, Saluki out of CHI, and stop at Cairo?

Yes, that was the site I had the problem with and confused me, the coordinates from that page did not have enough accuracy and places the old station behind the high school instead of further north in the train yard where it makes sense and likely really was.

CONO, Illini, Saluki out of CHI, and stop at Cairo?

Oh I found North Cairo, IL that has better coordinates. It was even north of Future City, at what looks like some train yard at the end of Kessler Rd., at more of a ground level location. We stayed at the Quality Inn a few blocks away. Dollar General seems to about be the only game in town.

CONO, Illini, Saluki out of CHI, and stop at Cairo?

We visited Cairo earlier this week. A very unique place. Trainwebs coordinates for the torn down station put It behind the high school. The route for the CONO puts it on the rails on top of the levy. How did the train route work when there was a stop, did they switch the train down to ground...
