Individualized bonus points offered in Fall Travel promotion

No points used for the hubby's & my trip next month, as we didn't have enough points to use just AGR points, and the "use points + cash" thing didn't start until 2 months after we had booked our tickets.

Individualized bonus points offered in Fall Travel promotion

2X - but does this apply to already-booked travel which takes place during the promotional period? I registered for the promotion just in case, but the email address about the promotion is a "no reply", directing customers to the "Contact Us" page on the Amtrak website, and the chatbot at...

    What should Amtrak change?

I saw a few "self-inflating camping pads" on Amazon which included customer reviews indicating they had been purchased specifically for use on Amtrak. However, I think the hubby and I will do without such things for our Texas Eagle trip next month. Since we'll only be going southbound as far...

    What should Amtrak change?

I haven't been in the sleeping car on Amtrak in over 40 years (and that was in Slumbercoach, and I was in my 20s at the time), so I'll have to take the word of others as to how comfortable/uncomfortable mattresses are in the sleepers currently. I remember my son quickly added a mattress topper...

    Texas Eagle discussion H2 2024

On the Texas portion of the route (until it joins the Sunset Limited), it could have a Spanish nickname as "La Aguilita". (Which could also work as a "filk song" to the tune of "Adelita," if someone could come up with appropriate lyrics.) If it were to attain the dignity of other Western LD...

Freight shutdown due to strike in Canada

The news report I saw (via "The Flyover" email newsletter) claimed that commuter rail had been impacted by the strike/lockout. If this is so, would the commuter rail referred to in the news report include VIA Corridor Service trains? Or perhaps just municipal commuter rail service in some of...

    Texas Eagle discussion H2 2024

The date was mentioned up-thread; I think it might be early September. (Haven't yet scrolled up the thread to get the precise date, though.)

    Texas Eagle discussion H2 2024

Probably not, if you booked a through ticket CHI-ELP with no breaks in the journey. Your sleeping car should be moved to the SL at San Antonio, probably while you're sleeping. You will lose electrical power in your room during the transfer, but if you're asleep, you won't care. If any of this...

VIA Rail Canadian and the Canadians

It took me a while to figure out that "Parks Canada Infrastructure" was a separate tab from the pictures of various locations around the town of Jasper. I felt so clueless! Good to see that the station looks all right.

Survey on the future of Amtrak

So maybe the list of towns in each state is like how other surveys list groups of people they don't want to include? (F.ex., if it's a survey about crooked attorneys, the survey organizers probably don't want to have attorneys (or their family members, like me) taking the survey.)

Survey on the future of Amtrak

So I wonder if perhaps the survey is only looking for responses from individuals who live in places which do not currently have Amtrak service?

Survey on the future of Amtrak

No sign of a survey in my inbox yet from Amtrak, and I'm usually ready to take any survey!

AGR FNBO Credit Card discussion 2023 H2 -2024

We signed up for a couple of streaming services when they had heavily-discounted rates (like $0.99-$1.99/month) during Christmas/New Year's. If we were to switch to using our AGR Mastercard for those services, perhaps we'd lose the discounted rate?

    Share the (electrical) power! ;)

VIA Rail Canadian and the Canadians

Probably close enough. My undergrad college was on the Minnesota/North Dakota border, roughly a 4-5 hour drive due South of Winnepeg, and March could still be pretty cold up there.

VIA Rail Canadian and the Canadians

I'll have to look up YouTube videos from people who have traveled on the Canadian in November and December. I expect a warm coat/hat/gloves would be essential for travel during that period, especially at "fresh air" stops.

Rail tunnel between Spain and Morocco

Tourists in Andalusia often make day trips to Tangier as part of their vacation (as my college group trip did, back in the day). On the other hand, illegal immigration and human trafficking (not just to Spain, but to other European countries via Spain) would become bigger problems if there were...

Rail tunnel between Spain and Morocco

I watched the video, and was impressed with how nice the stations looked. The bilingual Arabic/French signage in the stations was also helpful, as I could guess at the French easily enough (never studied French, but umpteen years of Spanish in high school & college helped). Incredibly cheap...

Rail tunnel between Spain and Morocco

Thanks for all of the added details! Our group trip's train (in 1978) used the Hendaye/Irun crossing heading up to Paris. We had previously also made a day trip Algeciras-Tangier, via ferry both ways. (One would think expanding ferry service between Spain and Morocco would be far more doable...

Rail tunnel between Spain and Morocco

I remember from my college days (in the 1970s) that Iberian gauge vs. standard gauge was an issue for international trains crossing the Pyrenees into France. I earned college credit for a month-long group trip to Spain in 1978, and I believe there was a delay at the French border while our...
