    Texas Eagle discussion

Since I haven't yet booked the trip, I will have to look into getting off at Austin instead of San Antonio. Sounds like it might be an improvement over spending the night in the San Antonio station, then perhaps hiking 1/2 mile each way to the 24/7 Denny's for "first breakfast" before "second...

I think that, from what I've read elsewhere on these forums (and on the Amtrak website), passengers on the TE/SSL continuing beyond San Antonio in either direction MAY disembark, but are not required to. (On days when the Eaglet ends its run at San Antonio, everyone has to disembark, as the...

They would still have made that vegan chili extra-filling, though. This is the current Flexible Dining menu for the TE between Chicago and San Antonio, per the Amtrak website.

The only problem with wandering the city is that the time when the TE/SSL is stopped in San Antonio may be quite late in the evening, with very few businesses open. (I have no idea if personal safety late at night in that part of San Antonio might also be an issue, but some travelers might be...

If they are continuing on the same train, they wouldn't have to disembark and re-embark, especially not in the sleeping cars. (Although there might not be any electricity or running water during the time when the Eaglet is coupled to the Sunset Limited westbound or decoupled from the SSL...

I Googled station information on the San Antonio station, since the hubby and I plan to take the TE from central IL down to San Antonio, and return the following day. Apparently, the station opens shortly before the southbound Eaglet arrives, stays open overnight, and closes shortly after the...

AGR FNBO Credit Card discussion 2023 H2 -2024

I had a somewhat similar experience last summer, where I was taken advantage of by a Facebook scammer (purporting to be a crochet hook company I trusted, and running a "giveaway"). Something seemed odd about the process to claim the "giveaway prize," so I checked my FNBO account the next...

I believe a kosher meal would also work for those who require halal meat, as kosher meat is required to meet standards at least as strict (probably stricter) than halal meat. (Not Jewish or Muslim here, but that's what I've read.)

The "gooey butter cake" I've seen at Walmart (and used to see at the local supermarket) was either in a 8" square foil pan, or single-serving square or rectangular cuts from a family-size cake. Hope those round individual butter cakes are at Sam's Club the next time I'm there!

    Chicago Union Station discussion

Even longer for me (not since grad school 40+ years ago). The hubby & I would probably be catching a connecting train if we were in CUS, though, so hopefully we wouldn't need to be outside the station.

    Chicago Union Station discussion

While researching (earlier this month) a potential south/west-bound Texas Eagle trip for this fall, I looked up the hours that the San Antonio station (our destination) is open. Because the southbound TE arrives somewhat late in the evening (8:45PM, if it's on time) and the northbound TE...

    VIA Canadian sleeper questions

Late 1962 would have been about the time Mom and Dad took my brother (age 3) and me (age 4 going on 5) from Chicago to Albany, NY to visit my paternal grandparents for Christmas. I vaguely remember our train compartment was a bit like European sleeper trains I traveled in as a college student...

Amtrak Dining and Cafe Service discussion 2024 H1

Traditional dining on the Texas Eagle San Antonio-Chicago seems like it'll be the bottommost priority on the "traditional dining on all Western LD trains" list. The hubby and I hope to ride the Eaglette from our local county seat to San Antonio in October, and assume we'll still be served "flex...

    Amtrak Price Tracking Tool

I used Rail for Less last year to pick the least expensive travel dates for our trip to Kansas City on the Lincoln Service/Missouri River Runner. The hubby would like to try the Texas Eagle at about the same time this year, so I tried a search for Pontiac, IL - San Antonio, TX roundtrip for 2...

AGR FNBO Credit Card discussion 2023 H2 -2024

I avoid credit cards with an annual fee, but I can see where following the issuer's cancellation instructions would make sense if an annual fee is involved.

AGR FNBO Credit Card discussion 2023 H2 -2024

As long as there's a zero balance on an unwanted credit card, I just cut it up (into multiple small pieces), throw it in the trash (with lots of nasty leftover food scraps on top, to discourage any creative garbage pickers), and wait for the company to cancel the card for non-use.

    Midwest Venture discussion 2023 Q3 -2024

In the older Coach car I was on in October, a disabled vet with a service dog was sitting in the designated "accessible" area, at the front of the car, across from the luggage rack. He wasn't wheelchair-bound, but there was extra legroom in front of him where a wheelchair could have been...

    Midwest Venture discussion 2023 Q3 -2024

The Coach cars were still a mix of old equipment and the Venture cars when the hubby and I rode the east & north-bound Missouri River Runner/Lincoln Service in October. There may be a higher proportion of Ventures in Coach now, though. The Lincoln Service trains go past my office window (just...

If you have the time to pick up Subway, they'll sell you a personal pizza. (We get those occasionally from our local Subway.)

    Amtrak Business Class

Business Class seats aren't assigned on the Lincoln Service or Missouri River Runner. But the extra legroom, less crowding & window curtains are all there, and very nice, too!
