The most scenic direction of each LD train

City of New Orleans - Northbound: Daylight from NOLA to near Greenwood, MS (Louisiana Swamps and Mississippi Pine Forests) & from Champaign-Urbana to Chicago (Rolling Farmland & Chicago Suburbs). Also, the CONO has, in my opinion, the best approach to Chicago Union Station, crossing the St...

CNO tracks over spillway on fire

Another alternative route for the CONO would be to send it west from Hammond to Baton Rouge then south to New Orleans.

    Crescent Route Tunnels

The only tunnel on the entire route of the CONO is at Union Station in Chicago.

    Crescent Route Tunnels

The tunnel in Alabama is between the stations at Birmingham and Anniston. Specifically, it is about half way between the towns of Leeds and Pell City near I-20 Exit 152.

    What would you add?

Here is a list of all the changes I would make if I could: 1) Add 2nd Seattle-Los Angeles route and run it via the Rogue River line: Seattle-Portland-Eugene-Grants Pass-Medford-Dunsmuir-Sacramento-Bakersfield-Los Angeles. 2) Restore the Pioneer as follows: Chicago-Des Moines-Omaha-North...

How do people know in advance which track Amtrak will use?

Another idea: watch the arrivals board, the track # will almost always be posted there long before it is posted on the Departures board.

    So, the wife liked CONO!

The consist no longer flips in the wintertime as the CONO no longer shares its equipment with the TE. The year-round consist on the CONO is as follows: P42, Trans-dorm, Sleeper, Diner (CCC), Sightseer Lounge, Coach-Bag, Coach, Coach.

    New Orleans to Memphis?

The CONO is the train I take most often as I only live about 40 miles from the station at Hammond, LA. I have taken the CONO to Chicago 22 times in the past 6 years. Northbound, meals included out of New Orleans are Dinner and Breakfast. As the train does not depart New Orleans until 1:45pm...

    Meals on the Ocean

Sleeper Plus Class is always the way to go on the Ocean, especially in the summer with the Park Car on the rear of the train. When I was on the Ocean last summer, the attendant in the Park Car gave a narration in the dome during daylight hours. She pointed out all of the historic and scenic...

    Hotel in Halifax

Great choice. I stayed at the Westin when I took the Ocean last summer. It is a very nice and historic hotel and is connected via an interior corridor directly to the VIA Rail Station.

If you have time, there is a nice Trolley/Railroad Museum inside the train station.

Capitol Limited Diner and Sightseer Lounge

On the Capitol Limited, you'll see Lake Michigan briefly in Indiana, and, if you are awake late at night, you can see Lake Erie at Sandusky and Cleveland. If you are on the train eastbound when it crosses the bridge over Sandusky Bay, you can look out over the water and see the lights of the...

    Texas Eagle Detour - 11/17/2014

Luckily it will only be a short bus ride. It's only about 2 hours from CDL to STL.

    Texas Eagle Detour - 11/17/2014

Thanks for all the information! I decided to go ahead and book the round-trip with AGR Points. Just one more question. What is the thruway bus like between Carbondale and St. Louis?

    Texas Eagle Detour - 11/17/2014

Is the detour worth it to take?

    Texas Eagle Detour - 11/17/2014

What are the chances that, with the detour southbound, I would make the connection to the 11:00pm bus to Carbondale to catch the CONO if I tried?
