On the left side from Washington to Harpers Ferry, then on the right from near Martinsburg to Cumberland.

Also, on the CL, the ride up the Potomac river valley between Martinsburg, WV, and Cumberland, MD is nice. If the train is on time, you may even catch the Sand Patch Grade in daylight. The CL climbs Sand Patch Grade upon departure of Cumberland.

The CONO is mine. I travel from HMD to Chicago on it at least every other month. And I go to the Hammond, LA (HMD) Amtrak station at least once a week to railfan.

Technically they could, but as of yet, VIA has not contacted me to tell me that the train is no longer running. Until they say otherwise, I'm assuming that I will be on a train.

The Cardinal eastbound is definitely worth the extra cost. It is, in my opinion, the most scenic Amtrak route in the East, especially with the daytime ride through the New River Gorge and over Blue Ridge Summit.
