    Brightline Trains West!

The background train is labeled "Metrolink", a Los Angeles service, so I think somebody confused the two ends of the line. Though this doesn't correspond to other artists' renderings of the Rancho Cucamonga station.

Experiences of travel including rail over time in the US

My first train ride must have been on the Princeton shuttle "Dinky" from Princeton Junction to Princeton and back. This must have been before New Jersey Transit took it over. Nice train for a small child, as there was no chance of ending up very far away if I missed my stop.

    Amtrak Coach discussion

In a few hundred trips on the Northeast Corridor, I've never had a problem with leaving things in the overhead rack. My concern is usually more to leave something at my seat so that somebody doesn't move into it. But I've never ridden coach off the Corridor, and I don't carry anything more...

Amtrak Solar Eclipse viewing April 8 2024

I've been to a few solar eclipses. They are much more impressive if the sky isn't cloudy. That's hard to predict months in advance, but generally Texas is less cloudy than Quebec, and Mexico along this track is less cloudy than Texas. Eclipse traffic is like a sporting event. People trickle...

Resumption of Amtrak service to Canada (2022-2023 Q2)

You mean the Adirondack? (Because the previous message was about the Maple Leaf, to Toronto.) Again, today, it is reported to be arriving an hour early. Somebody should compare the pre-Covid scheduled time with the actual (as opposed to scheduled) post-Covid times.

✈️ US dominates World's Busiest Airports list for second year running

I don't see the 2022 data aggregated for the New York area airports (JFK, EWR, LGA, SWF), but the Port Authority of NY & NJ published the 2021 data, where the total was just slightly below Atlanta, and significantly above Dallas. It's probably still above Dallas for 2022, but whether Atlanta is...

NEC overnight and late evening service

The overall project is scheduled to be completed in 2027, but I hope the nightly closings don't run that long.

Resumption of Amtrak service to Canada (2022-2023 Q2)

The Amtrak app reports that the Adirondack arrived in Montreal today 42 minutes early. I would have thought that the border crossing today would have been overloaded with Youtubers, or other hardcore Amtrak fans.

Long standing questions about Amtrak accounting

At the end of the day, what would actually be useful for planning would be: The change in required subsidies for adding or dropping particular services, and The change in overall benefit to the People of such an add or drop. And the effect of adding both service A and service B isn't...

Lake Placid, Saranac Lake, Westport NY questions

Before Covid, Amtrak ran bus service from Westport to Lake Placid. Then the border with Canada was closed, and Amtrak service, which previously ran past Westport to Montreal, was cut back to Albany. This service is just returning now, and it appears the bus has not resumed, yet.

FRA's Corridor ID Program and possible new Corridors

The Notice of Solicitation says that the FRA has to make a first report by May 13 of this year, including which corridors are selected for development. Nothing about which were rejected.

Dual Mode usage vs. Electrification of freight railroads in the US - pros and cons

How do electrified freight lines handle customer sidings? Catenary all the way to the loading/unloading tracks? Separate diesel shunting engines? Dual-mode locomotives? Batteries?

    Atlantic Coast Service discussion

It looks to me like the weekend schedules give the Northeast Regional arriving at WAS fifteen minutes later, leaving under an hour for the connection to the Silver Star, where the weekday schedule gives over an hour for the connection.

    Crescent discussion

I doubt the upcoming New Orleans-to-Mobile service will get a diner.

    Brightline Trains Florida discussion

The first fixed bridge on the New River in Ft. Lauderdale appears to be the I-95 bridge, at 55 feet of vertical clearance, but that's inland from the rail crossing. Way up north in New Jersey, the Portal Bridge replacement is quoted as about 50 feet above the water, so that's probably typical...

Amtrak is finally coming to Scranton!

As I read the document, they were assigning schedules assuming that existing NJT schedules cannot be adjusted, and no capacity increases can be made between Port Morris and NYC. "To minimize interference with commuter trains, peak-direction Amtrak trains would use the Montclair Branch with a...

    Amtrak delays

New Jersey Transit, which runs a lot of commuter trains over that line this time of day, now says that limited service has resumed between NY and Metropark. They are blaming this on brush fires lit by sparks from a freight train.

    Texas Eagle discussion

Not if you take a Tuesday, Friday, or Sunday departure. Those trains they attach to the existing Sunset Limited trains when they arrive. Or so I am told. I've only see this operation done on the Lake Shore Limited in Albany.

    Texas Eagle discussion

According to Amtrak's schedules,, only the Tuesday, Friday, and Sunday Texas Eagle departures from Chicago join the Sunset Limited at San Antonio to continue on to Los Angeles, after about a six hour layover. The other trains terminate at San Antonio. I guess, if you really needed to depart...

    Sunset times along train line

There are pretty good analytic formulas for computing the times of sunrises and sets, involving combinations of trigonometric functions. The dependence on longitude is linear, at 4 minutes of time per degree of longitude. The dependence on latitude is more complicated, and involves the time of...
