    Virginia Service expansion

Virginia has broken ground on the new Long Bridge! This project is part of a larger project to separate passenger and freight traffic in Virginia between DC and Richmond by constructing a third and fourth mainline track on the RF&P. These two tracks will be owned by VPRA and will prioritize...

Airo - Amfleet I replacement Siemens Inter City Trainsets (ICT) (2-3Q 2024)

Confirmed to be new SC-44s, courtesy of WorldwideRailfan.

    Amtrak P42C cab car

The conversion of P42s does not confirm the HHPC program a failure and instead is a rumor. Remember that the P42C project is based in Rensselaer while the HHPC project is based in Wilmington. Nothing states that one project cancels the other. Supposedly, 9750 is waiting for crews to be trained...

Airo - Amfleet I replacement Siemens Inter City Trainsets (ICT) (2-3Q 2024)

Amtrak probably has their reasons whatever the case. At least some of the other yards are still getting upgrades for Airo.

Airo - Amfleet I replacement Siemens Inter City Trainsets (ICT) (2-3Q 2024)

Not sure; however, both yards that you mentioned are still two of the five yards (not including Philadelphia) expected to receive upgrades to handle the Airo train sets, which will probably include some sort of maintenance facility since Seattle is also one of the yards. The Keystones are a...

Airo - Amfleet I replacement Siemens Inter City Trainsets (ICT) (2-3Q 2024)

The two new locomotives for Cascades are actually diesel SC-44s to supplement the existing fleet. No hybrid power is involved.

Airo - Amfleet I replacement Siemens Inter City Trainsets (ICT) (2-3Q 2024)

The Cascades sets are fully diesel. Essentially, it’s what Midwest has but with different interiors and a cab car. Also the battery APVs that the Empire Services are getting aren’t for long term use. The point of them is so that the diesel engines aren’t running in the tunnel to NY Penn and in...

Siemens Caltrans/IDOT Venture design, engineering, testing and delivery (2024)

Yes, 4626 got the nose and I believe other Midwest Chargers will head to PLS to get it too. It's also been implied that the WSDOT Chargers may get the nose around the time the Airo sets come in, but not confirmed as far as I know.

Airo - Amfleet I replacement Siemens Inter City Trainsets (ICT) (2-3Q 2024)

Airo is an Amtrak branding of the Siemens Venture sets; however, these cars are also modified to Amtrak's requested standards rather than being in an "off-the-shelf" configuration like the Midwest and San Joaquins Venture cars. Aside from that, the Airo sets consist of Venture cars and Charger...

    Amtrak Siemens Charger Locomotive (SC44, ALC42, ALC42E) (2Q 2024)

It is worth noting that the Airo sets are being used to replace intercity consists, which often use Amfleet Is. Since the night trains use Viewliners as well, or Superliners, Amtrak is not looking to replace those consists with sets that do not provide roomettes, etc., which explains the...

    Virginia Service expansion

Now there is the Commonwealth Corridor that was approved by the Corridor ID program, so we will see some east/west service eventually. However, given the number of projects on the DC - Richmond corridor, and the heavy infrastructure upgrades the Doswell - Charlottesville part of the route...

    Virginia Service expansion

From the looks of it, HRT has not fully moved into the station yet. I was over at the bus loop to watch the inbound train reverse into the wye and saw spots reserved for HRT buses.

    Virginia Service expansion

It’s awesome! I watched the first inbound train to the station arrive and also met people from Amtrak, VPRA, and the local government! Interior of the station looks amazing and is a great waiting space, and being level with the train was nice too.

I don’t know the exact reason but didn’t CSX complain about wires “getting in the way” of double stacked containers? If so, the deal likely involved no wires.

Airo - Amfleet I replacement Siemens Inter City Trainsets (ICT) (2-3Q 2024)

Virginia certainly has a plate full of projects, and I really hope many of them work out as this is my home state. Electrification may have years to go here; however, I can imagine partial electrification being established on the S-Line for any intercity trains that intend to utilize the line...

Siemens Caltrans/IDOT Venture design, engineering, testing and delivery (2024)

Basically a ban with exceptions. The Chargers can still be used if absolutely necessary (i.e. not enough F59s to run the San Joaquins alone).

Siemens Caltrans/IDOT Venture design, engineering, testing and delivery (2024)

Yes, I made an updated reply the day before. No, this is a test train. It is running again later today from Bakersfield to Sacramento.

Siemens Caltrans/IDOT Venture design, engineering, testing and delivery (2024)

Update: Cab car testing is on tomorrow’s lineup from Oakland to Bakersfield as a 600 extra symbol. Let’s hope a Class I doesn’t get in the way.

    Brightline Trains Florida discussion 2024

Brightline is backed by an investment group with other assets than just the passenger rail system, such as real estate. I believe they did also receive a bit of federal funding?

Siemens Caltrans/IDOT Venture design, engineering, testing and delivery (2024)

BNSF has potentially revoked their approval for cab car testing. This is only speculation, however this stems from the recent BNSF soft ban of Chargers on the San Joaquins. The lack of updates on cab car testing also leads me to believe this is true for the cab car; however, I’m not confirming...
