Amtrak is reporting signal problems affecting Capitol Limited, Lake Shore Limited, and the Crescent.

Can't be soon enough. The Southwest Chief has lost at least 3 P42s in the last month including tonight, and the #1 Sunset Limited is being towed by UP tonight.

It stopped updating at Trinidad, so those times were the predicted ETA (in italics) at that point. Now there are two broken P42s between Kingman and Flagstaff.

The whole problem is the ideal new station is in Phoenix, so no one wants to spend on a new Maricopa station.

The main speed problem is the old Class 2 (30 mph) jointed rail on the Cape. The Cape Flyer takes 70 minutes to get from Buzzards Bay to Hyannis. The track on the mainland is Class 3 (60 mph) up to the bridge.

The old Amtrak sign was finally removed from Union Station in the last year or so. As much as I'd love the old station back, from a connectivity standpoint a 44th St. station would probably work better. It's by the existing Sky Train (airport) and Valley Metro (light rail) station.

The active sections have signals; the eastern end was updated not too long ago. The inactive section hasn't been touched. It had semaphores which have been stripped in the years since. It would need all new positional signals.

Amtrak also has a "buy American" mandate which pretty much rules out anything assembled outside North America.
