New train (40-41 Floridian) between Miami and Chicago via Washington DC

True but at least they offer passengers a place to sit while enjoying your food and drinks and allows you to socialize with fellow travelers. Amtrak seems to think its passengers no longer deserve such luxury.

New train (40-41 Floridian) between Miami and Chicago via Washington DC

I hope all those who discouraged the procurement of bilevel equipment for Amtrak's new long distance fleet absorb this.

New train (40-41 Floridian) between Miami and Chicago via Washington DC

But What if the Floridian through service becomes really successful and popular? Time will tell but maybe the Star comes back as a separate train? We will see I guess.

Height clearances at Chicago Union Station

Are Superliners strange and novel? The Sante Fe High-Levels certainly were at the time but now the usage of bilevel trains has grown worldwide from regional commuter trains to high-speed TGVs. We are talking efficiency here. Superliners are more efficient than single level cars and Ultradomes...

Height clearances at Chicago Union Station

Oh course the proposal to lower the tracks brings up the possibility of Amtrak revising it's LD equipment replacement specs to allow for the use of the spectacular Ultradomes which would be even more efficient and "experiential" than Superliners. Chicago was the major height restriction and...

Future Amtrak Equipment and ADA ideas

Yes but a very small number of tables not capable of holding many passengers.

    Capitol Limited discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024

I did a search a while ago testing this exact situation. The Chicago - Cleveland city pair is the only place where you can compare Superliner and Viewliner rates since it offers both equipment types either on the Lake Shore Limited or the Capitol Limited. To my surprise the Lake Shore was...

Someone actually uploaded a video to YouTube about this:

    Auto Train service expansion?

Lot's of snowbirds traveling between Florida and "Chicagoland". Ohio was the second biggest market after the northeast when Auto-Train did their due diligence before expanding in the 70s. And don't ignore the Canadians who also have a big presence in the Sunshine State. The market is...

New train (40-41 Floridian) between Miami and Chicago via Washington DC

Just for fun I tested the Amtrak site to see what would come up on a Chicago to Miami reservation in December and January. This is what I got: Trip Details Services Route Segment 1 of 2 | 17h 25m 30 Capitol Limited Family Room Bedroom Roomette Lower Level Coach Seat Add-Ons Bicycle Pet...

    Auto Train service expansion?

Edit: The following post was transferred from a thread discussing the upcoming combining of the Silver Star and Capitol Limited in the fall. Although just a fantasy at this point, and although it's a roundabout route, this would have been a great way to try a second Auto Train route. Lots of...

New train (40-41 Floridian) between Miami and Chicago via Washington DC

For passengers going north of NYP, the Star didn't offer connections.

Future Amtrak Equipment and ADA ideas

Edit: The following post was added after a few comments that Amtrak was building too many different type cars in the new LD equipment proposal greatly complicating things. I felt that a long time ago. I posted this back in September 2023 when Amtrak first showed their concept of six different...

    Amtrak consists 2024

Around a year ago there was active discussion around several sites about the consist change. Comments like this: "I have watching Virtual railfan webcams in Galesburg, Ill. the last few days and it looks like they have reversed the order of #3/4 and # 5/6 with the consist reversed?" "The...

Bi-level Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement RFP discussion H2 2024

Just have to wonder if there is going to be enough future railcar opportunities for all of these companies to survive.

    Amtrak consists 2024

Whenever I have ridden Amtrak LD trains the Sightseer or Amfleet Lounge is usually filled with happy relaxed passengers. Whatever happened to the "experiential" vibe promised by Amtrak? This is such an important part of train travel. On the other hand I think Amtrak is doing well with the...

Future Amtrak Equipment and ADA ideas

Just can't not comment about the fact that Amtrak is showing great renderings of the coach cafe car that has beautiful dome-like skylights but only 3 1/2 tables stuck at one end so very few passengers can enjoy the great ambiance. This makes no sense especially if the lounge car is going to be...

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement RFP discussion H1 2024

So what are the advantages and disadvantages of Aluminum vs. Stainless Steel? Stainless Steel cars seem to last forever and aluminum cars seem to age more quickly but that's from anecdotal observation. Aluminum cars should be lighter in weight I would guess. If aluminum cars wear out quicker...
