Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement RFP discussion H1 2024

They seem to be saying you can make the windows as big as possible so there is the possibility that the bedrooms could have windows right up to the roof rail.

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement RFP discussion H1 2024

Yeah, i basically like most of what I see. It looks like the Solo-Suites are one window long so maybe they do nest into each other like the Delta One Suites but by facing each other so your feet go into the adjoining room? I am thinking the flat skylights would be much cheaper than a curved...

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022 - 2024Q1)

Actually bi-levels will work better than single-levels for ADA requirements. Seems contradictory maybe but they can be configured much better to provide suitable accessibility. Elevators are a given.

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022 - 2024Q1)

I guess I should add some concerns here though. If the replacements are going the route of certain Amtrak trends I must say I would actually prefer the Amfleets if these conditions are what's coming: 1) Narrower less padded seats 2) Less recline to the seats 3) 50% fixed backwards facing...

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022 - 2024Q1)

I remember the first time I saw a Metroliner in New York Penn and how sleek and futuristic it looked. Yes they have small windows, but they are not ugly and most people think they are fine. They ride well and still look pretty good for all the miles and years they have worked. That said, it is...

Siemens Caltrans/IDOT Venture design, engineering, testing and delivery (2012-1Q 2024)

Absolutely agree on this one. This seating set-up is a giant step backwards.

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022 - 2024Q1)

True but you are spending many more hours in Amtrak's seats so let's hope they are not the ones selected for longer distance trains. And why does a wheelchair have to have access to the entire train? Access to an "ADA core" the way Amtrak seems to be headed in it's LD train proposal, is a...

    Sunset Limited/Texas Eagle discussion

You can take a homemade rail cart ride on the abandoned route, including the site of the unsolved sabotage, here: (Turn on CC to hear the conversation) If link not working search for "Old tracks of the Sunset limited Amtrak train riding on Railcart - Arizona US. (PART 1)"

    Auto Train service expansion?

CSX is clearing the route for doublestacks so it will be possible in the near future. My last Amtrak trip was on the Auto Train southbound (I drove from Boston) and I felt it would be great if it left from New Jersey since the traffic north of Richmond was absolutely ridiculous. I have a...

Model train store in Massachusetts says it's the largest in America

Yeah, this has become my model train go-to the last several years: https://www.transportfever2.com/ It's a lot of fun and satisfies the itch.

Model train store in Massachusetts says it's the largest in America

Are you sure you're not thinking of Eric Fuchs? I used to go there when much younger. The coolest thing I bought was two HO scale electric trolleybuses that were steered along the road by the overhead wires. They were made in Germany.

FRA's Corridor ID Program and possible new Corridors

When we have discussed restoring a Chicago-Florida train, this is the portion of the route that was pretty much dismissed as being too slow and curvy and not workable. I find it interesting that we maybe starting in the middle and extending things at either end would be a real possibility.

    Sunset Limited/Texas Eagle discussion

Union Pacific just announced new 2024 Intermodal service from a new intermodal terminal in their existing yard in downtown Phoenix to California. What could this mean for eventual reopening of the rail line west of Phoenix and the possible return of Amtrak to downtown Phoenix? Union Pacific...

Miami Intermodal Center at Miami International Airport

That wye was there and they recently severed it when they extended NW 28th street to appease Amtrak's problem with trains that wouldn't fit in the station. All they had to do was locate the newly installed crossing gate/signal slightly west. This whole thing is a such a cluster . . . .

Future Amtrak Equipment and ADA ideas

Yup about the same situation between Florida and NYC/Boston. There has to be a middle ground here. My wife most recently rode coach to Boston and I most recently took the Auto Train in coach. We just couldn't justify the cost and would have loved a lie-flat Delta One type accommodation.

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022 - 2024Q1)

Speaking of rotating seats, I for one hate the fact that almost all of Amtrak's new coaches have fixed seats that force half of the passengers to face backwards. It seems that these diagrams suggest that these new LD trains will be "one-directional", i.e., coaches, cafe, diner, cafe, sleepers ...

Future Amtrak Equipment and ADA ideas

I thought about this for a while and if you all would indulge me I would like to present an alternative concept to those interested. I think Amtrak has "overthunk" this. I am going with the bi-level design since I think it works better and is more desirable. Amtrak is proposing using six...

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022 - 2024Q1)

Maybe time for two separate LSL trains? Keep one on the present route (CHI-BOS) and run the second (NYC - CHI) through Detroit (maybe via Canada).
