    Phoenix to Los Angeles

    1) there is talk about implementing a commuter rail line along BNSF's tracks. could those be used to route the sunset through town? 2) there is now a commuter bus from maricopa to phoenix... see here

    Omaha and parking

you might also consider taking jefferson lines. they have three daily KC-to-omaha departures (some can be booked via greyhound). i've used jefferson before, just not to omaha. the omaha bus terminal isn't far from the amtrak station, although the terrain isn't "easy", so you might want to...

    Omaha and parking

from memory, i don't think the parking is guarded. i would park in a garage downtown and take a taxi or walk to the station if you're storing your car more than a few days. you might also consider driving to one of the smaller towns along the zephy route (osceola, creston) where leaving your car...

    Amtrak Looking at Repairing Cars

my guess is state-sponsored routes, especially with the passage of the 50/50 match legislation and the impending passage of the larger 80/20 matching program.

What's up with Milwaukee's new station?

always be wary of local tv news reporters claiming to have a scoop... it's almost always over-hyped nonsense.

    mc cain's agenda on amtrak

mccain will probably be able skate through the general without having to mention amtrak at all. if he is elected, it's likely he will face veto-proof votes, just like the current president.

    Showering if you're in Coach

some travel/luggage stores sell towels or washcloths that come in a vented or mesh pouch that allows them to dry easily. very handy for coach travel.

    Midwest flooding

my friend is on the chief headed to chicago right now. they were stopped for a little over an hour south of fort madison. when they started moving again, they were told they'd be moving very slowly through galesburg, where connecting passengers would board a bus and head to chicago via toledo...

The Soft Relaunch of the Coast Starlight

i don't remember paying for the wine tasting on my trip last year in the parlour car, but if that helps them keep it going then i'm all for it! i must say that was one of my best train experiences ever. i can't wait to do the trip post-relaunch!

    Dinner Seating arrangement.

last i checked, hotels aren't on wheels. adjust your expectations accordingly. and when was the last time anyone truly traveled in luxury in america?

H.R. 6003, The Passenger Rail Investment and Improvement Act

seems like an obvious upgrade to all trains would be hand dryers, like on some corridor trains. that alone could save much of the cleanup effort.

H.R. 6003, The Passenger Rail Investment and Improvement Act

is anyone actively pursuing such a thing? the grassroots group we have in kansas has been really effective at getting lawmakers' attention by getting official support from cities on or near the proposed route. seems like a no-brainer since there is so much frequency already!

    Chicago Layover

better check http://transitchicago.com/ before hopping on the El during a layover. lots of work going on, especially on the nights and weekends, and you don't want to get stranded. we were there on saturday and the red line was rerouted above ground and it took us over 45 minutes to get to...

    State-sponsored train observations, questions

are they subsidizing services? or just paying for capital improvements? i've heard of the lynchburg effort and it sounds like it will be a state-sponsored route.

H.R. 6003, The Passenger Rail Investment and Improvement Act

why can't hiawatha trains alternately terminate in madison and greenbay/sheboygan?

    State-sponsored train observations, questions

thanks, alan. i'll watch michigan and oregon. you're correct on oklahoma; i think they still have a fight, but the texas money (new for last year?) has abated much of the heat. i found an article that says texas is teaming up with some neighboring states ("ark-la-tex") for new service (as well...

    State-sponsored train observations, questions

yes, we've spoken to amtrak and will be meeting with them in chicago next month. the track between OKC and newton is all BNSF and is reportedly in good shape (the rest of the route currently supports amtrak). there are a couple of choke points, but i think we've noted those for the DOT and...

    State-sponsored train observations, questions

i've ridden a lot of amtrak's system lately and am working with the group who's trying to get service expanded in kansas. so, here are my questions and observations about how various states handle their sponsored routes (note: i'm sure a lot of these things are decided by legislatures and DOTs...

Missouri Approves $8M Subsidy for Amtrak

no, but the capital improvement request for the KCY-STL route that will be in a separate piece of legislation will be the state's first request for FRA federal matching funds. if that works, the high capital cost of getting decent speeds through the ozarks to springfield might have a better shot.
