Will full service dining ever return to the Western trains?

I personally don’t think they’re coming back. Would like to be proven wrong. That being said, I’ve done two, eight-night trips this summer on Amtrak. I decided I wasn’t going to let the meals be the deciding factor. I enjoy the experience of traveling in a sleeper, looking up at the stars while...

Eastern Sleeping Car Passengers Pre-Order Meals

My go-to was the land and sea for dinner. Always good. The chilaquiles were really good for lunch and I never had a bad plate of railroad French toast. I miss the traditional dining, but if this is the way it’s going to be, I can learn to deal with it.

Eastern Sleeping Car Passengers Pre-Order Meals

I just had the shrimp with lobster sauce last night and it was very good. No complaints at all.

Eastern Sleeping Car Passengers Pre-Order Meals

There’s another screen I didn’t save which showed you the items you can pick. Below each item was a description. For breakfast, you don’t have to select anything..it just lists everything they are service. The choices are the same as what’s being offered on the updated menu here...

Eastern Sleeping Car Passengers Pre-Order Meals

I just selected meals for my trip on 19 next week. Here are some screen shots. It was pretty intuitive and they sent me a confirmation email at the end.

What train holds the record for latest arrival/longest delay on Amtrak?

I was on a 19 hour late California Zephyr in 2004 due to flooding in Iowa + a freight in front of us derailed on the detour route.

    Is Portland, OR Safe?

Is the Portland lounge even open again? When I was there last month, it was closed.

    Is Portland, OR Safe?

I was just in PDX last month for a layover between the westbound EB and the southbound CS. It was a rainy day so I pretty much just stayed inside the station. Got a bite to eat in the station and went outside a few times for some fresh air. The only people who are allowed in the station are...

    City of New Orleans routing

I managed to try the IP Hoosier State (next to the Canadian it was the greatest train ride I'd ever been on), but I'm kicking myself for not giving the Pullman Rail Journeys a shot when it ran on the back of the CONO.

    City of New Orleans routing

Maybe it's easier to just stay on CN all the way, instead of having to deal with BNSF as well. Plus, the train would have to make several moves IIRC to access the Memphis river bridge after it makes the station stop.

That old station caught my eye! So cool!

    NOL-WAS-CHI-PDX-MTZ-CHI trip pics

Last month (June 16 - 24) I made an 8-night trip around the U.S, taking advantage of the low bucket prices. I thought I’d share some pictures I took along the way. I mostly took videos but I snagged a few shots, as well. I was booked on the Capitol Limited from WAS to CHI but I switched it to...

    City of New Orleans routing

    1. Is there a direct route from Memphis to St. Louis? It would probably add a couple of hours of increased trip time if so. There’s a pretty easy thruway connection in Carbondale that you can take to STL. Downside is it’s a van, but I’ve used it a few times. Not a bad ride, only about 90...

What is the current consist of the TE on the days it operates with thru cars to LAX? Trying to figure out where the thru sleeper to LAX is generally positioned on the portion of the route from CHI to SAS.
