"More than one in four Amtrak trains are late" says the Business Traveller

I don’t think the Crescent is ever on time going north, at least in Greenville SC. I pretty much checked it almost every day this summer, and I never saw that it was on time or even close. I recall that one day it was only 35 minutes late into Greenville and that was the only time it was less...

I’ll be commenting when we get back from ur extended trip. The Crescent was horrible - very late, limited selection of food and beverages(out of a lot), and poor service. I’ll have a detailed report later.

DST back to Standard Time (while on Cardinal)

Just did a google check and note that the newspaper articles which come up say it happened in 1961 but they are wrong. It was 1959, my junior year in high school but otherwise they are on point. The Committee of 500 led the reform movement. At that time, Kentucky had a law that the State...

DST back to Standard Time (while on Cardinal)

This Newport Ky “sin city” was closed down in 1959 when George Ratterman (former back up to Cleveland Browns quarterback Otto Graham) defeated Frank “Screw” Andrews (yes that is how his name appeared on the ballot), for Sheriff of Campbell County, Ky and cleaned up the whole County. The story...

Just a note on the Crescent - worst ever! I’ll go into more detail on my trip report but the whole f&b service is a mess and out of control. The SCA came by and told us that the only item left was the chicken. He said he was taking reservations and what did we want. Jokingly, we said the...

    Rail Passenger Assocation Dues Increased

Blame the Supreme Court, Congress and the President all you want but when AMTRACk won't, with transparency, honestly and accurately account for revenue and costs, there is no way for The legislative or executive branches to address the problems of AMTRAK or its management (one and the same).

On 20, the Crescent coming into Culpepper Va about 21/2 hrs late. At 7 am they were out of the breakfast sandwiches (the attendant called it Jimmy Dean. Said they only had one and the guy in front of me got it She said the people boarding in New Orleans ate them yesterday morning and there was...

Dinner on Westbound LSL from NYP

The Sleeper Passengers do not get “free meals”, they pay for the meals, whether they eat them or not, when they buy the ticket. As to whether or not Amtrak properly accounts for such payment, that is an entirely different matter.

At the risk of endlessly repeating myself, I have pointed out numerous times the fallacy of counting as revenue, what the sleeper passenger actually ordered/ate. You pay for the potential meals when you buy the ticket. The amount credited to F&B is the revenue but it does not appear that this...

So how much would the ticket price be reduced if the F&B would be carved off? Whatever that amount is , it represents the actual amount of revenue properly attributed to F&B. I am not saying that is how AMTRAK actually calculates revenue from F&B since no one seems to know how they calculate...

    Seating Protocol

Your guess is correct. We are staying in Brockville to visit my sister. Looking forward to the trains. Yes, our afternoon train won’t get us the meal but we will relax with the drink.
