I’ve done this several times and if you give them notice the Conductors never seem to have an issue with it. They like to know who is on or not on the train, and sometimes apparently it affects how the train parks at the platform. So just let them know.

Don’t know if there are more derailments, but there is probably more attention being focused on the safety issues. By the public and by lawmakers.
