Empire Builder derailment at Chicago 5/7/23

Just not something you expect to hear once, let alone twice in 10 days?

A day in the life on the Eaglette

10-12 years ago, tried brisket at a fundraiser. They were giving samples. Asked the guy what was his secret it was so good. He said “My secret is I’ve been cooking it for 10 hours!” Only other thing I remember is his wife told me it was “Alabama Style”

A day in the life on the Eaglette

I’m no expert, as you will see haha. SE Michigan does have the odd BBQ place here and there. Best food IMHO seems to be had at little mom and pop shops. And which seem to go in and out of business. Brisket is sometimes interchangeable with pulled beef there’s also pulled pork or chicken...

    Bid Up questions and experiences

I’ve never gotten a BC bid up to work on the Wolverine. Even with seats available. (They will invite you to bid on a sold out car). Of course I’ve also only lowballed the bid.

    Bid Up questions and experiences

Hasn’t worked for me 😁 But if you book in the app it will give you the option to bid. The tool also lets you determine if your booking is eligible for bid-up. You might also receive email solicitation to bid. Once you’re on the bid up screen you can experiment with the slider and see if the...

    Earth Day 2023

Thanks for sharing that. Don't be too discouraged though, there are some inherent flaws/assumptions in the questionnaire.

Fare Buckets - and when do they increase/decrease?

Been following this thread with interest. The newer Amtrak yield management system does have a plus side for those of us who can't really book trips 11 months in advance (in my case, 3 months can be a stretch). I was able to book a recent trip on the Capitol Limited on short notice - a week...

    Capitol Limited, Washington-Michigan stations

At Cumberland we were instructed to keep the Conductor in sight, who directed us to board through a different car than the one we had stepped off from. Something to do with the shorter platform. We weren't there for long but it was a nice opportunity to stretch. There was a crew change. I...

    Capitol Limited, Washington-Michigan stations

And soon after I retrieved my bag, it was time to board! The lounge was quite a bit more crowded than when I had checked in earlier. Redcaps were on hand to preboard those needing assistance first, then the attendant opened up the West doors to the tracks and we all filed out to the waiting...

    Capitol Limited, Washington-Michigan stations

So the last time I rode the Cap, it was Michigan-Washington. That train originates in Chicago and connects all the Michigan passengers in Toledo. And I'll have another similar upcoming trip next month. This time, the reverse: I had a train ticket leaving Washington at 4:05. Previous legs of...

Fare Buckets - and when do they increase/decrease?

It appears that Amtrak is adopting the yield management style used by airlines, at least to some degree. Meaning not just based on booking as far in advance as possible, in order to find the lowest fare almost a year ahead of time. More like taking into account the dates where travel demand is...

    Greensboro, NC station stop discussion

Update: Tried to plan a Greensboro stop on this most recent trip, long story short nothing really worked out other than taking the 10:30 am Piedmont departure from Charlotte, last week, to Durham. It was a beautiful day, lovely ride and my gosh there was so much construction going on at the...

    Early deboarding

I’ve done this several times and if you give them notice the Conductors never seem to have an issue with it. They like to know who is on or not on the train, and sometimes apparently it affects how the train parks at the platform. So just let them know.

    Freight derailments

Don’t know if there are more derailments, but there is probably more attention being focused on the safety issues. By the public and by lawmakers.
