Passing motorists must have thought it was just another engine on fire

Say it nicely, it you must, Paul is a great friend of AU and has given us some really useful tools. Plus he was born and brought up in a much different world and some habits are very hard to break especially when they are that old. That word is defined in today's dictionaries (Random House and...

    LA Metro Orange Line Busway

Because when the Orange Line opened there a considerable number of accidents at intersections. Most of the sheep using these intersections just weren't aware that buses were now crossing them. The MTA then required the buses to slow their crossing speeds to 10 MPH, which they e\eventually...

Stopping the Coast Starlight for Vandenberg A.F.B. activities

I saw several (it is about 20 minutes of constant roaring) and participated in a MITO once. Even at that young age, I was smart enough not to do that again! There are still several wings of B-52s and they are still at the tip of a very big spear.

    Los Angeles

One minor nit --- the official name for the station is Los Angeles Union Station --- LAUS. The owners changed the name to match what every one called it a several years ago.

Lancaster (CA) Wants to Close Train Station to Keep Homeless Out

In the mid-San Fernando Valley middle and upper class suburbs, I regularly see homeless. I have some training in evaluating people and I would estimate that more that 50% of the homeless I see have some mental problems. It is not just economic. In addition the "mainstreaming" of mental...

CA HSR Really is Under Construction

Here is an excerpt of an artilce in the May/June 2014 Public Administration Review based on a study of corruption by state. You guys peaked my interest so I did some digging. The results are interesting and seem to follow the general perception with some exceptions. You will note that...

Cops called after fliers fight over seat recline

Well, technically, it is a battery. 'Battery was defined at common law as "any unlawful touching of the person of another by the aggressor himself, or by a substance put in motion by him."' This is the most used common definition. On the other hand, it is officers discretion in many places.

Tunnel could boost high-speed rail cost [ California ]

From the project maps and the stated time, it would reduce an about 16 minute segment to about 11 minutes. I would still call this reducing the transit time a little. It would seem to me to be a lot of money for very little gain.

Tunnel could boost high-speed rail cost [ California ]

Unlike the NY tunnels, other than decreasing the transit time a little and requiring less disruption to some structures during construction along the surface route, there are no apparent advantages to the tunnel. There is one singular disadvantage --- cost. Both to build and I believe to...
