An interesting report from Reuters: https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/biden-kishida-likely-discuss-texas-bullet-train-project-sources-say-2024-04-09/?utm_source=reddit.com

Chicago South Shore & South Bend (NICTD) discussion (2023-2024)

Also in news regarding the South Shore Line, a few days ago it was announced that busing will end and full rail service resume on April 9th, with the new schedule taking advantage of the double-tracking starting on May 14th...

    2023 Illinois State Rail Plan

Not sure if this is the right place to put this, but this is probably of interest: https://idot.illinois.gov/content/dam/soi/en/web/idot/documents/transportation-system/fact-sheets/2023%20Illinois%20State%20Rail%20Plan%20Main%20Document.pdf

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement RFP discussion H1 2024

One of the primary motives seems to be that this gets them out of having to make every car accessible.

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement RFP discussion H1 2024

I've done some asking around and you should be in the clear to share it if they've given it to you.

What time of year to travel cross country

I am considering a transcontinental trip via Amtrak in either May or September. Is there any reason to prefer one month over the other?

New Gulf Coast service (New Orleans - Mobile and Baton Rouge)

I think Amtrak withdrawing would be worse for other route proposals, not better...

    Brightline Trains West!

Always said I'll believe Brightline West is happening when it starts construction and not a moment before. Hopefully construction actually will begin soon.

    Acela 21 (Avelia Liberty) development, testing and deployment (2018 - 1Q 2024)

The NYT reports that computer modelling is finally finished and testing of the trainsets on the NEC will begin: https://www.nytimes.com/2024/01/13/us/politics/acela-amtrak-avelia.html

Effective Transit Alliance's view on the New York Regional Rail network

I asked Alon Levy for a response and they gave a typically combative reply:

FRA Long Distance Service Study discussion

Mike Christensen, Executive Director of the Utah RPA and involved in the study, says that instead of a revival of the Desert Wind or Pioneer what is likely to be proposed is a LA-Vegas-SLC-Boise-Portland-Seattle train.

    Amtrak Cascades Service discussion

And now it's official - two new round trips between Seattle-Portland starting December 11th:

    The Electrification discussion

Maybe there was some confusion with the 50Kv AC iron ore railway in South Africa, which does indeed have a much longer distance between substations than other AC lines? (Historically their solution to the problems caused by this was to run mixed electric/diesel consists, but that has apparently...

Which of course is also the case in Europe.

Effective Transit Alliance's view on the New York Regional Rail network

It works in that they are able to provide a reliable enough service for millions of commuters to use it. That's perfectly true, but nor is it the case that what other cities do is irrelevant. If everywhere else does something, it is at least worth considering.

Effective Transit Alliance's view on the New York Regional Rail network

Why do you think progress has been slow? Most countries with through running are not known for their always punctual trains. Why does it work for them but it can never work for NY? Yet every other city has plenty of passengers using through running trains. Again, where is your evidence that...

Effective Transit Alliance's view on the New York Regional Rail network

This is an absurd claim to make without very strong proof. 10 minute dwell times would be a significant improvement over the current status quo. I would be very surprised if NYC was the one major city in the world where people do not wish to travel from one side to the other.

Effective Transit Alliance's view on the New York Regional Rail network

And they also offer suggestions for fixing such issues. Through running is advocated for a great many more reasons than just getting trains to clear Penn Station quickly. Do you have any detailed analysis showing that a six-track main line is necessary?

Effective Transit Alliance's view on the New York Regional Rail network

So you have no actual source for your claim that the Effective Transit Alliance's report is "largely based" on the work of RethinkNYC. Also, seeing as you approvingly quoted The LIRR Today, you may be interested to know that they are in favour of through-running.

Effective Transit Alliance's view on the New York Regional Rail network

I'm not sure you've read the report, since for starters it's not from RethinkNYC!
