Progress on service to Madison WI

Might a new station be intermodal, like Milwaukee, with room for buses, also?

No Amtrak Beech Grove moves in 3 weeks

I didn't realize Amtrak has a turnaround and maintenance facility at Brighton Park, southwest of their big yard that everyone knows about beyond Roosevelt Rd. I'm going to have to sort out and spot where, exactly, that is next time I'm on the Orange Line or a trip to Springfield.

    Seattle, WA

I enjoyed a very nice day at that zoo on my trip ten years ago. Of course, things evolve, but I found it both big and diverse enough to be truly worth my while, as an animal lover. If I recall my various city zoo visits correctly, they have a lot of birds, not just in the avian house but in...

    Chicago Union Station discussion

As always, I recommend the latter route, with such a simple (and frequent in most hours) bus connection to/from Union Station along Jackson (east to Blue/Red Lines at Jackson/Dearborn/State and Loop trains Orange/Pink/Purple/Brown at Quincy/Wells) as well as west to Union Station on Adams in...

Twin Cities (Minnesota) Local and Suburban Rail Service discussion

Might the theorized I94 S-Bahn type rapid transit line between St. Paul and Minneapolis offer a potentially more direct rail connection for Amtrak trains to also use than the currently cumbersome routing available between the two cities stations? (Hypothetically, as I imagine it isn't extremely...

    Chicago Union Station discussion

I got to use this entrance a couple of weeks ago. It was a happy surprise to see it available and significantly trafficked by passengers obviously on their way towards departures...

    Chicago Union Station discussion

This is always the best route to Union Station, imho. (There are also other bus routes along Adams, all of which will get you to Union Station easily.) That said, the L will begin running to UIC/Halsted again tonight, including the Clinton stop.

Go to Greektown for brunch. Or the Fulton Market District. The downtown streets are fine on a Sunday. Enjoy a walk along the river or at Millennium Park for free. Or visit one of the fine museums.

Hotels near Rail Transit and Commuter Rail

There are some offbeat and interesting hotels near the Damen and Division Blue Line stops, in Wicker Park: an ecclectic neighborhood. I can't speak for costs (they might not be terribly discounted.) But if one wanted to stay a bit beyond downtown in places with some history or character...

Hotels near Rail Transit and Commuter Rail

If one did want to stay along the Green Line, the place I would recommend is the Carleton in Oak Park, just a block away from the Harlem stop and amisdt lots of restaurants and shops, two nice parks (one with an historic mansion that hosts tours and arts programs), near the Frank Lloyd Wright...

Greyhound lists Chicago hub terminal for sale

The City of Chicago is seeking to purchase the Chicago station, to use it as a common bus terminal facility for operarors including but not limited to Flix/Greyhound: https://chicago.suntimes.com/2023/6/26/23762618/greyhound-bus-station-chicago-terminal-transportation-department The apparent...

Hotels near Rail Transit and Commuter Rail

Also, consider airbnb. A lot of people offer residences near transit. One additional thought....are you considering blue line accessibility, specifically, due to its closeness to Union Station? (Which is the common assumption about what to do by many on this site.) If so, I think that's a...

Hotels near Rail Transit and Commuter Rail

Many people staying in Chicago book at hotels just off the Cumberland Blue Line stop or the ones easily accessible from the Rosemont stop. I talked to some Argentinians who came for the blues fest a couple weeks ago that showed me their motel 6 cards for wherever out that way. It's about a 40...

With a different sort of outlook: consolidating zones, encouraging day trips outside downtown, making riding more affordable. https://abc7chicago.com/metra-fares-train-time-schedules/13412711/

Ten year transit plan for Chicago

I agree about the need for easier accessibility at the Madison Ave entrance to Union Station. That said, in some sense, doesn't the connection you're looking for sort of already exist? Of course, there isn't a concourse over the platforms, which though desirable is probably not practically...

Ten year transit plan for Chicago

An extensive "ten year plan" (I wonder how much could practically be accomplished in that time) vision for expanding transit in Chicago. Some are, perhaps, more ambitious concepts that would not be so easy to realize, let alone fund. Others are already on the drawing board to get done. This...

Why don't more "High Profile" people ride the train?

Of course, Bob Newhart is from Chicago! He came back a few years ago for the dedication of the new theater space at Loyola University, of which he's an alumnus.

You KNOW that I had that (and Irv Kupcinet) in mind, while composing my post.
