    Cardinal discussion

We decided on the Cardinal to CHI to pick up the SWC. and back from/to PHL on both trips. Trip is May 2024. An argument can be made that the NER to WAS to pick up the Capitol Ltd is better but at roughly the same price the two train segment seemed more convenient. The deciding factor was that...

What time of year to travel cross country

I find it difficult to predict prices on Amtrak travel. If there is an "off season formula" I just don't get it. What we try to do is book our vacation travel in mid May, avoid traveling on Amtrak in June, July, August and early September. We book early and are not sure that we get the best...

Ideas for Amtrak to raise revenue

Amtrak must market better, make the service more attractive, and stress the comfort level. New proposed routes will also help. For instance Yellowstone the most popular National Park in the USA has no rail service anywhere close. Years back the park had its own train station. How does an ad that...

    Rail Passengers Association Discount Fare?

The agent that I spoke with was very polite but had no idea how to apply the RPA discount without a code. Judging from the replies above, there is no discount code. This problem may be better taken up with the RPA who made the arrangement with Amtrak. I will contact them. I qualify as a senior...

New Cancellation Policy at Amtrak (August 2023)

Does this mean that we can follow the fares and rebook if we find a lower price? The agent told me this was possible but if we cancel and rebook we could end up in another room or in a different sleeper car. With the price of sleeper fares today it's probably worth looking at it.

    Rail Passengers Association Discount Fare?

Tried purchasing the RPA fare on a trip online today. Provided my RPA membership number and the agent asked for a "discount code" . I could not find this on the RPA site on my membership card or anywhere else. Does anyone know how you take advantage of that discount?

New Cancellation Policy at Amtrak (August 2023)

Booked some tickets today and was advised that a new cancellation policy is now in effect. If I understood it correctly if you cancel before 120 days of your reservation you get a full refund. Within the 120 days you will receive a voucher. If you cancel within two weeks there is a $250...

Fare Buckets - and when do they increase/decrease?

Ready to start booking our 2024 long-distance trips and checking fares. Is there any easy way to discover what level the prices are at? Would like to know if we are paying high medium or low bucket fares. OO UPDATE: Found the latest fare bucket chart prepared by Niemi and it is helpful but fares...

    Booking online on Amtrak website

I would say the Amtrak ticketing website needs significant improvement . I can only get it to work on the simplest requests like for a R/T NE Regional or Acela ticket to Washington Union Station and back. Start putting in info on the travelers like senior on one an adult on the other and it...

    Cardinal discussion

For our LD trips we typically board in PHL at 30th st station. The LSL doesn't stop there so the choice is the Cardinal or CL out of WAS to CHI usually for the first leg of our trip West. The CL route saves us about 5 hours and we get a chance to have a good lunch at WAS. The Cardinal is more...

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022 - 2024Q1)

Canadian passenger rail is in the same position in replacing Long distance train cars. Some of their Rocky Mountaineer cars look very similar to the Amtrak Superliners but without sleepers. Stadler the manufacturer that built those cars should be able to build new Superliners.

    Food delivered to the train—ideas?

We have taken food on the train many times but mainly at extended stops. There is a long stop on the SWC route at Albuquerque where a grocery is one block from the station. The Cardinal also has a stop at WAS that allows you to de-train and bring back food from the large food court there. IIRC...

Video on "Why Trains Suck in America"

I believe that the creator of this video with this title is being a bit too harsh with his criticism. Government took over a failing passenger rail system around 1971. Not only was the National Highway System in force, air travel was being considered as superior by the majority of travelers...

    Cardinal discussion

Planning our 2024 trip now to the Grand Canyon North rim. Will drive up from Winslow once again. It always a tough decision deciding between two trains or three to get to Chicago to make the connection to the SWC. Usually the NER/Acela to WAS connecting to the CL is less expensive but not...

    Hotels convenient to Amtrak

To answer the question directly of a Hotel Convenient to Amtrak; the best one that we ever encountered was The La Posada Hotel (former Harvey House) in Winslow, AZ. The station platform is in back of the hotel and you just walk into the lobby. Also along the SWC line in Las Vegas, NM there is...

    Future direct Chicago-Florida Route

Jis you are correct the Midwest autotrain did start at Lousivile and end at Sanford FL but I believe the Floridian that had the Autotrain consist went on to Miami after dropping off the cars at Sanford. . Thank you for the clarification.

    Future direct Chicago-Florida Route

I have read that there is a higher number of "snowbirds" in the mid-west than there is in the North East. Point is that there should be a good market but it may be for a thru route. My guess is that a new Floridian route would best serve the Amtrak Chicago to Florida passenger needs. Looking...

    Amtrak Gallery Cars?

IMO, the Gallery cars were not a good idea. The upper level had about half the number of seats than at the platform level. To maximize on passenger capacity, the bi-level design currently used by NJT with double row seating both sides of the aisles on two levels appears to be a far more...

How much of the Amtrak map has one covered?

Can't say that we are anywhere close to Nat Read's achievement. Our train trips tend to be LD vacation related and we have been on the Crescent, SWC, EB,and CZ for overnights multiple times. On the Eastern routes we have traveled on the Autotrain, CL, and Cardinal for overnights as well. Add in...
