    Auto Train service expansion?

The only reason that the long distance routes lose money is that Amtrak includes in their cost of operation a portion of the expense to operate the NE corridor and everything on the whole system, including stations, red caps, employees track etc. If those LD routes were judged on their own...

    Mystery Points Boost Offer

That is a very good point but the bottom line is always total cost. You need quite a few points to book a trip. Points on purchases used for tickets should be saving you money but I'll agree not necessarily if you buy them.

    Mystery Points Boost Offer

Received an email yesterday on Amtraks Mystery Bonus Points offer valid until 7/31/23. It looks like Amtrak is offering a "points boost" by providing extra points with each purchase. I purchased 20,000 + 6000 and calculated that the points cost .029 which is really not that great but when FNBO...

    Capitol Limited discussion

We were on the Capitol Ltd in mid May to start our trip to Winslow AZ and return. The train had two sleepers and three coaches but no SSL on either trip. Except for the unhealthy flex meals the trip went OK. We had a great room attendant named JD. The return trip was a whole different story...

Albuquerque Hotel— Shuttle to Amtrak Station?

Taxi service is available in Alburquerque. I would not walk to the station. Last month when we stopped there it seemed many mentally ill and homeless people made their home there. Didn't seem safe to us.

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

IMO, the Flex dining is very cheap low quality food loaded with fat, salt, sugar and unhealthy food additives. Decent quality food can be had without traditional dining. Going back before flex was introduced; the Cardinal served a menu in the Diner lite/Cafe car that was very similar to...

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

I agree wholeheartedly that traditional dining must return on the LD routes. The Flex meals are loaded with chemicals, fat and sugar. Sleeper passengers pay a very high price for their accommodations, in some cases 5x first class air. When we pay $1000 or more for a sleeper trip ( and it can...

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

Too many chemical ingredients in the contents of flex meals for me and my allergies. For the high price that we pay for sleepers Amtrak should be providing better food. If you have photographed the lables from the other menu options please share them. I just updated my original post and added...

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

On a recent Capitol LTD trip we were served Flex Meals. While a bit improved from the earlier variety of these meals, they still leave much to be desired. For those who wish to know what they are eating I have attached pictures of the labels of the Asian Noodle Bowl and the Short Ribs...

    Amtrak vs spouse/partner

My wife and myself have been traveling via Amtrak for over 20 years. My wife dislikes air travel, even first class, the crowded airports, the long waits going through security being treated as a convict and the tightness of it all. She must have a bedroom on the overnights, roomettes for day...

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

Just called today and they added that note to my reservation. The problem is that garlic seems to be in a wide number of foods. Eating a small amount causes an annoying itch. By consuming a larger amount its redness and hives. The allergy is so bad that antihistamines and light dose prednisone...

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

Its starting to look more and more like I will be eating bread and butter for my dinner on the Capitol or going outside to Union Station and getting something to bring onboard. I just checked and it looks like quite a few places are now open like Cava, Potbelly, Roti Mediteranean food, Jersey...

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

Its on the first leg of our trip PHL-WAS-CHI-WLO. We will try to eat something more chemical free and lower in fat before boarding but AFAIK many of the food places at WAS today are not so hot. There used to be a few good places pre-pandemic but I have no idea what the situation is now. I can...

    Cardinal discussion

Our last trip on the Cardinal was in 2021. At that time there was only one sleeper VL1 , the cafe/diner lite, a baggage car (don't recall a baggage dorm ) and three coaches. It was a small train with only six cars and only one engine. On a prior trip going back about 10 years, the diner lite...

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

Will be taking a trip soon. Does anyone here know where I can get a list of ingredients on the Flex meals, I suffer from severe food allergies to some ingredients like garkic and especially additives like Sodium Nitrite and MSG.

    National Train Day 2023

I recall the National Train Days at 30th street Station in Philadelphia and at Union Station in DC but sadly those are now gone. They were good events that promoted the service, introduced the general public to train travel and allowed some of us here to congregate and chat. It was fun walking...

    Chicago Union Station discussion

Closest place to Chicago Union Station to buy groceries, food and wine would be Marianos at 40 S Halsted street Chicago 60661. It is a large full service market, with a bakery, meat section, pizza stand, prepared food and they stock wine and other drinks. There is an ice cream stand on the...

Ohio finally starts the process for new Amtrak service

This is great news. At one time Amtrak served many cities in the state of Ohio including Canton, Lima on the old Broadway Ltd route (tracks still there) and even reached Ft Wayne in Indiana while going on to Chicago. There was talk about restoring passenger service on this line a few years back...

Amtrak mobile website defaults to Chinese

Thats the only explanation that I could come up with. Nord has available servers in So Korea and Japan as well. Whats your take on this?

Why don't more "High Profile" people ride the train?

To start with compared to the rest of the world, Amtrak overall is a SLOW service. For instance, the CL from Was to CHI takes about 18 hours to travel 780 miles when the train is on time. Average Speed 43.3 mph The LSL takes 20.2 hours NY to CHI. Average Speed 47.47 mph. I've driven by car...
