Because they also apparently decided they wouldn't need them on the flip side of the pandemic and laid them off as well. They were like all other corporations assuming people would be breaking down doors to get any job they possibly could afterwards. Things didn't pan out like they hoped so...
Amtraks hiring process taking several months to just ACCEPT an applicant, if they even tell them, can be improved and made far more efficient by its leadership if the leadership really cared about getting its organization fully staffed.
I waited until the end of the trip and tipped each one personally before de-boarding. Mostly because I just don't carry cash and had to wait to stop somewhere that had a quick access ATM.
On my trips the first week of November the roomettes on the Eagle (Dallas to Chicago), Zephyr, Coast Starlight and the second and third day of the Eagle from LA to Dallas were unbearably hot. The first night of the LA to Dallas Eagle was the only time it was less than 80F it felt like.
Whats freakin amazing is that I think the track has been relaid and all the cars cleared of it already. Them railroad companies sadly have handling these situations down pat it seems.
