How will rising diesel fuel prices affect Amtrak? (poll)

With Amtrak having extended less-than-daily operation on a number of trains until at least late-May, I think it's probably safe to say increased service or capacity is fairly unlikely.

Will commuter rail regain popularity again?

My comment was from 10 months ago. Not sure how numbers look now. EDIT: I'd also add that it's also possible that less service (fewer buses, fewer and/or shorter trains) is being operated than 2+ years ago so it could still look quite full but have fewer riders. Not unlike our favorite US...

Dunkirk NY bid for Amtrak Station

My first thought was "wasn't this suggested or considered quite a few years ago?" and, sure enough, the article quotes someone as saying it was looked at 21 years ago.

    Midwest Rail Plan Final Report

Support exists, nonetheless. That it does not always translate into electoral success is a different matter. And, it's worth noting, the current governor is supportive, as were most recent office-holders with the obvious exception of his immediate predecessor.

    Midwest Rail Plan Final Report

I can't speak to Indiana or Kentucky, but there is certainly support for extended and expanded Amtrak service in Wisconsin.

    Original/Old Amtrak Network Map(s)?

Hmm, so you're looking for maximum route-miles (as opposed to train-miles). Just guessing, but late 1970s?

    Midwest Rail Plan Final Report

Running a Thruway bus shuttle between Peoria and Normal, connecting with all (or at least most) trains at Normal would be a great start. There are a number of possible Thruway connections I'd like to see added/improved, or at least considered/studied, in Illinois (Champaign - Decatur -...

Montreal Exo (RTM) orders Siemens Chargers

If wikipedia is to be believed, AMT was replaced by RTM in mid-2017 and RTM then rebranded itself as Exo in mid-2018.

Question related to train speed, passenger safety and control...

How would that work? Can you expand upon what you're suggesting?

    Atlantic Coast Service discussion

So it looks like October 2021 ridership for the two Silver trains was about 40,000 (source: Monthly Performance reports at the bottom of this page). Am I comparing like to like here? October 1984 at about 43,000 and October 2021 at 40,000 (ignoring the Palmetto)?

    Atlantic Coast Service discussion

What will change in a month or two? EDIT: Wait, are you saying we'll have data for the currently-combined train in a month or two? I so, I was probably not clear in what I was asking. I was wondering how ridership in the years/decades-past 18-car era compared to ridership in recent (probably...

    Atlantic Coast Service discussion

Anyone have ridership numbers for these trains in the 18-car era? Was ridership significantly greater than now (or the late 2010s)? How long were Silver trains in off-peak travel seasons?

Missouri River Runner and its funding challenges

St. Paul, Milwaukee, Chicago (TCMC) second daily service

The current planning assumes two trainsets, not making a same-day turn at St. Paul. Schedules are far from certain at this point but the thinking has been a Chicago departure around 9-10am and a St. Paul departure around 12-2pm. More info from MnDOT and WisDOT can be found here: Twin...

New Illinois services, referring to Moline and Rockford?

    Change 48/49/448/449 Service

In this scenario, are we assuming the 750-mile non-federal funding rule has been removed or revised? Or that MA & NY have agreed to fund these two new connecting trains?

    Sunset Limited and Phoenix

Only $4 million?!? That just seems incredibly low. Unless, I suppose, UP has been maintaining the track to near-Class 4 levels. I would have guessed that costs would be at least one and more likely two orders of magnitude higher.

    Sunset Limited and Phoenix

There is light rail in Phoenix but, as of yet, no commuter rail, although there have been and may continue to be ongoing studies looking into adding commuter rail.

    Connecting Bus to LAX

Didn't that law get changed in the last few years? Did implementation of that change get postponed because of COVID?

Could Amtrak service between LA and Las Vegas be profitable?

I want to say that there was an agreement with UP on what infrastructure improvements (additional or lengthened sidings, I think) were needed but those improvements got held up due to environmental concerns. I don't remember if funding for those improvements was fully lined up, though. Of...
