    Route Timetable PDFs returning? (2021-2022)

The latest issue of TRAINS magazine (December 2021) has a short blurb about Amtrak timetables. In it, Amtrak Marketing Vice President Kerry McKelvey says that the "timetable automation project" will have some sort of results before the end of the 2021. So does that mean that September has been...

New Pacific Surfliner schedule now available (Effective October 25, 2021)

Equipment rotation, perhaps? Ensuring that trainset ends up in Los Angeles for servicing on a consistent basis? Just a guess, I didn't actually sort out equipment turns from the schedule.

Siemens Caltrans/IDOT Venture design, engineering, testing and delivery (2012-1Q 2024)

Out of curiosity, do you know how many cars your train had? Wondering how the consist compares to pre-pandemic norms.

Missouri River Runner and its funding challenges

Missouri River Runner trains are typically Horizon (or sometimes Amfleet) coaches. Those coaches have the standard overhead storage as well as shelves at one end of each coach (there are shelves at one end and restrooms at the other). There is also typically a wheelchair spot at the end of the...

So how does that 11 hr 58 minute layover in NOLA work?

Something like this (Rails to Rooms) perhaps? I haven't actually looked at the site for quite a few years until now but I recall using it in the past.

    Metra wastes money

Seems to me that with the commute traffic having not rebounded, Metra should focus more on the non-commute traffic, which would presumably involve running more trains outside of normal peak/rush periods.

Brightline, "conservative" policy, and the future of rail

Iowa as a whole is a relatively slow growth state, no doubt. But the Des Moines, Iowa City, and Omaha (mostly in Nebraska, but partially in Iowa) metro areas did see significant population growth in the 2010s. In fact, Des Moines is one of the fastest growing metro areas in the Midwest, with a...

FlixBus starts Minneapolis - Chicago route

Hmm, interesting. I believe Flixbus started Milwaukee - Chicago service not too long ago. (It might be a longer Milwaukee - Indianapolis/Cincinnati/Columbus-or-something route through Chicago.) At that time, I seem to recall comments from Flixbus that it was considering additional services to or...

Lessons learned from CHI-STL HSR YouTube video from High Speed Rail Alliance

I had thought, after riding through there plenty of times and looking at satellite views, that although there might be a couple pinch points in Indiana, for the most part adequate right of way exists in Indiana. It seemed to me like the trickiest needle to thread is in Chicago around Englewood...

    2021 Infrastructure Bill

Performance Improvement Plans. A 2008 law required Amtrak to prepare Performance Improvement Plans for each of the long distance routes. You may still be able to find the reports floating around the internet. (Not entirely sure, though, as I haven't searched for them for a number of years.)...

Ugliest and Soul-less Amtrak Stations Used in Metropolises Today

This wikipedia page (Amtrak Standard Stations Program) does a good job of explaining things, but essentially, Type 50C was designed for a peak of 50-100 passengers.

Lakeshore Rail Alliance - Advocating for More Service Along Lake Shore Limited Route

Trains 29 and 30 are the Capitol Limited which runs east of Cleveland to/from Washington, so it doesn't originate/terminate at Cleveland.

    Western US Auto Train idea

Tell us more about how this service would work. What are some suggested terminal (loading/unloading) locations? What would the approximate run time be? Also, there are probably a whole host of other threads discussing possible additional Auto Train routes. Those threads will lay out some of the...

How much would it cost Amtrak to build its own tracks/right of way in areas where it gets a lot of pax?

Maybe look at the details of the recent deal between Virginia and CSX. You can probably get some cost estimates for acquiring ROW and adding tracks.

Does Amtrak Have a "Last Mile" problem on corridor routes?

I have long thought that a significant expansion of dedicated Thruway bus services, connecting with both long distance and corridor trains, should be a priority, perhaps even more so now as a method of rebuilding traffic lost over the last year or two. Having dedicated buses linking Corvallis...

    Progress?

I'd be curious what inflation-adjusted fares the passengers in the top photo were paying then. Not that it explains all of the changes, but last time I checked inflation-adjusted airfares (at least in the US) are much lower than in the 1970s.

That's some pretty serious face interaction, though!😂

    NJ Transit Equipment Order

That's a 2.5 year old article. Is the order still proceeding as planned in late 2018?

    Chicago Union Station Metropolitan Lounge

I used the Legacy Club a few times and recall decent, even fairly large, numbers of passengers using it. I specifically remember the large "collection" of baggage off to the left (south?) as one entered. (Although it could have been peak holiday travel season? I really don't remember exactly...

RFP issued for Amfleet I replacement

Claim to fame? Really catchy English-language product names/acronyms (FLIRT, KISS, SMILE, etc.), perhaps among other things.
