Intercity Bus Cuts Due to Pandemic

The last time I had taken a look at Megabus schedules, it looked like their Midwest service had shrunk to just a Chicago-Milwaukee-Madison-Twin Cities line. No idea how much of their pre-pandemic service will return, or when it might. It looks like the options right now are Greyhound or airlines.

    Stations that should be replaced

All Aboard Ohio has recently been advocating for a new intercity rail/bus station at or near Tower City in Cleveland. It's my understanding that there has also been some interest at the local level in moving toward a new or expanded station at the Lakefront Station site; I'm not sure whether...

Siemens cars went on test run on CN on Monday-checking to see if they will set of the crossing shunts

Doesn't UP also have this problem, or something similar? I think Amtrak has to add extra cars to Missouri River Runner trains as well.

Will commuter rail regain popularity again?

Yeah, most suburb to suburb trips are difficult to serve. It would often require at least a three leg (two transfer) trip.

    Sleeper 9712...Wow!

Fantastic! Really appreciated the in-depth review.

Inaugural run of the new "Night Owl"

A railfan riding the inaugural run of a new (or restored) service. Seems like something we would celebrate, not disparage. Just a guess, but there are at least of few here who have done, or at least attempted to do, the same thing.

Will commuter rail regain popularity again?

NY MTA stats show that subway ridership is still down about 2/3 (about 1/3 of normal). The two MTA commuter railroads are down about 3/4 (only 1/4 of normal). And MTA bus is a little under 1/2 of normal ridership.

Republican coalition against Mobile Amtrak service

Probably depends how we're defining red (and blue) states. Presidential elections? Presidential election margins? Gubernatorial results? I wouldn't hesitate to call Missouri a red state. But I think Michigan and North Carolina would be more purple-ish, varying between bluish and reddish shades...

    Railroad crossing accidents

Completely agree. Right on red prioritizes motorist convenience over pedestrian safety. It should have no place in an urban environment.

SWC and TE trip in bedroom

Is the platform canopy still basically just a frame? Or something like that?

    US Airports and Transit Connections

I seem to recall that space was left for that additional northbound track and platform but don't recall ever seeing anything resembling a timeframe when it might be added.

Siemens Caltrans/IDOT Venture design, engineering, testing and delivery (2012-1Q 2024)

Yeah, pretty sure I read that somewhere as well. I want to say it was an Amtrak or IDOT Twitter account, perhaps in response to an inquiry.

Siemens Caltrans/IDOT Venture design, engineering, testing and delivery (2012-1Q 2024)

Amtrak operates MARC (Penn Line only), Metrolink, and Shore Line East, right? Any other commuter services (not Amtrak-branded/operated intercity services, like Downeaster, Piedmont, etc.)?

    New Southern Belle

Yeah, I agree with that. Service south of Shreveport to New Orleans seems much likelier than north of Shreveport to Kansas City. Not that I'm holding my breath waiting for New Orleans - Shreveport trains to start running. I know there are advocates pushing for New Orleans - Baton Rouge service...

    San Antonio Wye

I'm almost completely ignorant of the situation in San Antonio. For those who are familiar with things there, is there an alternative that would be better for Amtrak to use?
  16. E

    US Airports and Transit Connections

Isn't it operated by NYCDOT rather than MTA?

You've been appointed President of Amtrak....with a catch

Eh, pretty easy mistake to make. "Experiential" isn't the most common word one comes across.

You've been appointed President of Amtrak....with a catch

Just going to point out that it is "experiential" (an experience) rather than "experimental" (an experiment).

    Should Amtrak allow smoking again?

If the concern is that "smokers' stops" unnecessarily lengthen schedules and delay trains, shouldn't the answer be to remove/shorten those stops (at least those that exist to accommodate smokers and not for some other operating reason)?

    Detroit, MI

It's behind a paywall so, yeah, perhaps a hint would be helpful...
