First time Zephyr + Starlight, Surfliner, Ventures, Metra, and United

Very enjoyable! I was a little disturbed by this, however. Is the HVAC on a train different than the HVAC in a building? Do they need a sign to keep people from not doing what could obviously be a big problem?

    Cello on a train

Even if the cello has a hard case it would be risky. Besides, the Amtrak web site says: "Oversize instruments may only be carried onboard with the purchase of an additional full revenue seat." I'm not sure how they would handle this in coach with unreserved seating as...

    Southwest Chief discussion Q4 2023 - 2024

The Amtrak station is at the intersection of 1st and Central (Old Rt 66). There is a Hilton at Central and Broadway, about two blocks east on Central from the station. If you walk you have to walk under the train overpass, but it is a short walk.

    Pets on Long Distance Trains

I thought they didn't allow any animals in sleepers, even service animals. Some kind of issue with allergies. Hmmmm?

    Greyhound sounding Chicago alarm

I saw this article on transportation and it has some ideas about the importance of bus transportation in making last-mile connections. https://getpocket.com/explore/item/why-did-america-give-up-on-mass-transit-don-t-blame-cars?utm_source=pocket-newtab-en-us "A bus that comes once and hour...

Bustang Denver Union Station to Estes Park/Rocky Mt Nat Park

This looks like a fantastic route. Too bad the Bustang routes are more limited, but I bet the Bustang routes to Craig and Crested Butte have great scenery, as well as the routes to Grand Junction and Durango. I found a document on the CDOT web site a graph w" Amtrak Top 10 Long-Distance...

    Greyhound sounding Chicago alarm

Even though Kansas and Missouri signed a pact just a few years back banning this type of competition, a group of business people and politicians in Kansas are actively pushing this 'lose-lose' scenario that only hurts taxpayers.

Bustang Denver Union Station to Estes Park/Rocky Mt Nat Park

I've been reading some about the Bustang Denver - Estes Park route , 2024 being it's first year in operation. Two buses depart daily at 7:00 and 8:00 am weekends and some holidays thru the end of September. There are free shuttles in Estes Park and RMNP. One advantage of using the shuttles to...

    Pets on Long Distance Trains

Did you ask them if they were service animals, maybe they were 'out of uniform'?

Mistaken Luggage at New York Penn Station

Hopefully the person that has your luggage also wants to switch back. They might contact people at the station, Amtrak customer service, etc.

    Denver CZ Day Trip

Too bad they don't have the Ski Trains running all year, and travelling farther west than Winter Park. The train is late sometimes, but there are five Bustang buses leaving Denver going west towards Grand Junction. I've thought about some traveling using them as they not only travel the main...

    USA Rail Pass questions

The rail pass is good for 10 segments, a segment defined as one ride on one train. It usually costs about $500, so that is $50 per segment. If your iteneray includes a ride on a different train that is a second segment. LAX to SEA only takes one train, the Coast Starlight. You only have 30...

    Kansas City vs. La Plata

La Plata is just a quick stop with no real amenities at the station other than the waiting room and parking lot. The town has no car rentals so unless you bring a folding bike that you can carry-on (no checked baggage) you would have to find transportation to Marceline. Kansas City of course is...

    Greetings Fellow Rail-riders

That would be quite a long bus ride, but it might be worth being able to leave your car in Arcata, and either way you need an overnight near where ever you intend to catch the Zepher. Sometimes when you sort out every detail the right option becomes more obvious. Some threads on this subject...

    Mexican rail comeback

It is more like a 'higher-speed' rail rather than what we consider true high speed. But the fact they will put their own rails on the existing right of way seems like a good idea to me. The article didn't seem very promising for any quick results, but I believe it when they say it will be a boon...

    Mexican rail comeback

I saw this and was impressed that they have committed so much money. MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexico’s massive, debt-fueled passenger rail building program is not going to end with the administration of outgoing President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, but will instead double, he said Wednesday...

    Southwest Chief discussion Q4 2023 - 2024

When you look at the map and data on this website: https://asm.transitdocs.com/ ... you'll see it's been maintaining two hours late all the way from Chicago. You can look at the AMTRAK web site and on the site map at the bottom of the page there is a link "service alerts and notices" . Usually...

St. Paul, Milwaukee, Chicago (TCMC) second daily service

Are you going to check it? I always wonder how well riders do on the bike/train trips, especially LD.

Questions About Upcoming Trip on the Silver Meteor?

I'm pretty sure it's just like an auction. The highest bidder wins (and has to pay the highest bid). Pricing is a complicated issue and people trying to get the best price should look at the threads on this subject concerning 'buckets'. I believe they send out the bid invitations a week or two...

    Cardinal discussion

Yes, all kinds of possibilities that would simply use part of a LD route. They should be fairly easy and economical, but look how long it took the Borealis to launch.
