Stadler Flirt Hydrogen MUs for Amtrak California

Pretty good video. So they use hydro electric power from the dam for electrolysis to make the hydrogen and then the hydrogen powered fuel cells make electricity to power the train. I guess the conversion is not highly efficient but in this case it should reduce the carbon footprint. I like the...

    Fare Buckets discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024

If you get on the web site and try to book again does it put you in a different car? If so, and it is priced 'low bucket', maybe you should rebook it (at the lower price) .

Brightline Trains Florida discussion 2023 Q4

If Brightline was obligated to pay a certain percentage of their profits to Virgin as part of the branding deal you wouldn't think the amount would be that great, since Brightline hasn't made much profit yet. On the other hand if Brightline was to pay a fixed fee per year I think that would...

What kind of Superliner is this? (Empire Builder roomette)

I prefer leather vs vinyl for that reason. Some plastic seats have "micro-perfs" that supposedly help.

    Amtrak Coach discussion

You could wear the same clothes you would wear sleeping in an airport terminal. I've slept in coach and it gets very cool at night, even in the summer, so a lot of people would recommend a fleece throw or blanket. What were those things they sold on TV years back, a 'snuggie' or something? A...

    Las Vegas Monorail

It will be good when the Brightline trains are operating, and it will be interesting to see if there is a line set up to accomodate visitors from the new train station.

    Amtrak to Grand Canyon

There are some significant delays on this line at times. Amtrak issues alerts on twitter/x and their web site, but there are some other tools you can use to get an idea of the possibilities of delays. Here is a map that shows the Amtrak system. You click on your train (#3) and it shows the time...

St. Cloud, MN long term parking?

You can look at the street view on Google maps and it appears there is ample parking. The web site says overnite parking is available. It's probably free, but you can't tell how well lit the area is at night, and there doesn't appear to be any security cameras.

    Amtrak to Grand Canyon

You would probably detrain at a better time of the day in ABQ, but it is a long drive to FLG from there, and the scenery in that part of the ride/drive isn't my favorite. There are lots of things to see, though, so if that's your plan it can work. It might take nearly two days to drive it so...

    Chicago to Kansas City

I think that makes a lot of sense, in fact, I have been wondering if it might be better to have several trains covering the same route as the SWC, ie, a train between CHI-KCY, another train between KCY - ABQ, and another between ABQ-FLG, and finally a train between LAX-FLG, which could possibly...

Coast to Coast, and South to North, a first Amtrak trip

Here is a trip by Matthew Fish on the Empire Builder to Glacier that might be interesting for you to view: https://www.amtraktrains.com/threads/glacier-national-park-by-the-empire-builder.85603/ A way I have thought about to reduce costs in large cities: stay in a smaller city and use a local...

    Brightline Trains Florida discussion

I would agree. Horse drawn stage coachs also had classes of travel. I wonder where the name for the class of travel called "coach" came from? A sample fare schedule posted at Lincoln, New Hampshire: - 1st class: $7.00 (rode all the way) - 2nd class: had to walk at bad places on the road...

Various short trips around the Willamette Valley

This is a good idea, but I bet most people wouldn't know how to figure out that it's possible. I'm not sure if there are any guidebooks that descirbe these kinds of short sidetrips in any detail.

LIRR cleaning rails of leaves using Laser

I saw this on the web and wonder if other railroads have looked into this technology? "New York’s Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) has struggled for years with decaying leaves on the line during what its president Phillip Eng calls “low-adhesion season.” Trains can struggle to accelerate or stop...

New Gulf Coast service (New Orleans - Mobile and Baton Rouge)

You're right. The Rail Passenger NARP hotline says they will have local food on the train. I guess the big obstacle is the PTC section needed for the station area.

New Orleans to Chicago via Charlottesville VA

If you book the two segments as one reservation I have heard they will hold a train for a while, probably less than a hour. Charlottesville might be a good place for a multi day stop. You could visit Monticello for example. You would probably have to rent a car.
