New Gulf Coast service (New Orleans - Mobile and Baton Rouge)

You are right when you say "First they need to get this train running". The trip is only a little over three hours and Amtrak has enough to deal with just getting everything set up. Maybe it would be better overall to encourage people to get food before they board the train.

New Orleans to Chicago via Charlottesville VA

If you like riding trains you will get to ride more trains for a longer period of time going through Charlottesville. They have a good station and Charlottesville is a nice place to visit. The Amtrak web site provides a link to Google maps with the location of the station...

New Gulf Coast service (New Orleans - Mobile and Baton Rouge)

The entire route is in one region, noted for its cuisine and seafood, so it would make a lot of sense to have local specialties. I like gumbo, but I've read some people have issues with okra. I had some jambalaya in NO once and it was so good I had to learn how to make it later. Fortunately...

All About the Portland MAX (and associated Transit)

Seems like a good way to improve serviceand it isn't very much more than $200 million. I see the Hillsboro airport has a direct connection. When I rode the Red line I remember there was some sort of wait at the airport, I don't know if it was from interference with the Blue or Green lines but I...

Sunset Limited: Maricopa to New Orleans?

Do you have the links to the Amtrak Train Status pages? https://asm.transitdocs.com/ https://www.amtrak.com/track-your-train.html You can monitor the train status from the pages, but I think in your case it might be wise to call Amtrak on the day of your departure, especially if the train is...

Round trip Chicago to Kansas City on 319 and 318.

Maybe other passengers are curious about what's going on, too? Do you have a Garmin or GPS? It doesn't need cell.

FRA gives notice on Rule Making for Passenger Equipment Safety Standard

I agree it seems kind of shocking. Maybe a good thing for the older trains still in service for tourists? Ok, I took a gander, but after a while I was hoping there is a Cliff's Notes version somewhere. Maybe with pictures?

    Empire Builder discounts?

They say you can customize the tours to a great degree as to the details but as PennyK says they can cost more. Have you considered a hybrid trip? Maybe there are some other options than a sleeper all the way from MSP to Seattle. I'd say it's a good thing you are getting an early start...

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022 - 2024Q1)

Can they use more than one manufacturer to build parts of the same order? Could that help get cars in service sooner?

Visit to Amtrak Operations Center by The Points Guy

I wonder how I can get one of those simulator setups for the house? I bet people have them interfaced to a model setup too, with a cam on the lead loco.

    Amtrak cancellations due to Idelia

It's pretty bad if they ran out of Dinty Moore. Maybe 95 will be cleared before the train tracks but the train has an excellent saftey record. The Thursdays before big weekends are often pretty bad on the highways.

Passenger train service to Phoenix AZ.

I know Amtrak really wants to get the Phoenix metro back in service. I read quite a bit about the old route and the devious sabotage of the line, which is still being investigated. It seems that these shorter regional trains run with more frequency and overlap of the LD routes is a great idea...

Pacific NW locations reached by train

I've always wanted to visit Crater Lake via the CS, but I was thinking of stopping at Chemult, which is a bit closer. Of course, if the Trolley can take you from Klamath that would be better, but the web site directs people to a spot near the Crater Lake Park visitor center. I visited Crater...

Passenger train service to Phoenix AZ.

I found a line on my map that goes from Wickenburg to Parker then west and then back to the I-40 area. THere is also a line from a place called Eloy on the SL line a few miles east of Maricopa, probably how the SL used to get to Phoenix I guess. Would these help for a daily RT ?

California Zephyr issues in Salt Lake City

I've never gotten off there but I remember looking out the window. It looks pretty well lit to me. Too bad they don't have a Lounge like they have in places like CHI and NYC. Of course if a person were forced off the train in this kind of environment it might not seem so friendly. I think...

Amtrak Texas Eagle stop in De Soto, Mo

    California Zephyr discussion

Weather is not always easy to predict but GJ is at an altitude of approx 4600 ft. and it can get cold, especially at night. Late December can be kind of a transition period into full blown winter so you could encounter a wide range of temperatures. Watch the Weather channel the days leading up...

    Southwest Chief discussion

That's interesting. I was looking at the itineraries. You'd almost think you get some kind of discount by getting a big package but I know they are in the business of making money. Did they insert a bunch of 'fat' someplace? I'm sure a certain amount of the pricing should depend on the dates of...
