    Europe Train question 2

I've gone from Lisbon to Madrid by train. But it was the night train, direct. So I can only say that it was a bit jolting, but was nice enough. Seats were cushioned and there was a nice snackbar lounge. I sat at the counter writing notes. Left in the late evening and got to Madrid the next morning.

    question about Sunset

I read some time ago that there was a plan (by whom, I don't know) to end service between LA and New Orleans. Is that likely to happen?

    Europen Train Question

hi, i've taken hundreds of trains in Europe, and can assure you that you'll be fine on Swiss/Italian trains. If you were venturing into Romania, I'd warn you about the gas that criminals pump in to put you to sleep before robbing you blind. But don't worry about Switzerland and Italy. Enjoy...

    VIA on time performance

i rode the canadian (I'm American) last summer, Toronto to Vancouver, and it was the finest train ride I'd ever had, including the many in Europe and on Amtrak. Great scenery, first class service (I had a berth, so meals were free), ON TIME. Three days and nights of good train ridin'. I highly...

Longest Train Routes in the World

the sunset and canadian may be similiar in length, but what a big difference in scenery and service! The canadian still runs the dome lounge cars, and it has the magnificant park car. And the diners are great, too. A wonderful trip.

    My first train trip!

hi k, i just traveled a few weeks ago on 3 rivers. NYC to chicago. It was quite late but I didn't care as the scenery was pretty and the crew so nice. Great ride. You'll have a good time. Don't worry bout the food; just hang out in the lounge car and play cards. The attendant will tell you what...

    autotrain or crescent?

thanks all, for your comments. Railman, I'd like to see the Blue Ridge Mountains; perhaps I'll opt for the Crescent. No, I don't have a car, so I would likely take the Silver Service if taking the Atlantic route. Ah, so many places to go during a month railpass. I'm considering the following...

    Bargains? Best Route? New Registree!

what's to argue about??? Good for Alan for giving the codes. Let more people ride amtrak and maybe we can have viable rail passenger service in this country! :)

    autotrain or crescent?

if you had to pick one (which I will likely have to do), for scenery, would you go with the Crescent or one of the Atlantic coast trains (NY to Florida)? As far as the train itself is concerned, which is nicer? In terms of lounge car, crew friendliness, etc? Thanks much, Scott

    question about getting a sleeper

thanks, guys. Good advice about the pass, Alan. I like swamps, but not sure an hour or two of swamps is worth the ride. I might just take 3 rivers over to chicago and then the chief to LA. Scott

    question about getting a sleeper

Hi all, In October, I'm considering the North American Pass. I've just got a couple of questions. If I want to upgrade to standard sleeper, particularly on the superliners, should I try a day or two before boarding with the 800 number, or deal with conductors on the same day? What are some...

    scott

hi gang, next week i'll take the 3 rivers nyc-chi. I've been tracking it's arrival times, which have been highly erratic. Yesterday it was over five hours late. I figured it might have been because of a truck that was hit, but the newspaper article said it was the Lakeshore Limited. Any idea...

question about Texas Eagle and connections

If one travels from LA to San Antonio, I see that you connect to the Texas Eagle in order to go the two hours to Austin. Here's the problem: the ever late Sunset Limited gets in at 5am; the train to Austin departs at 8am. Seems fine. Three hours. But we know how late that train can be. If I...

    Kansas City to California

hi, you'll be fine in coach; no one will take your seats, and there will only be someone on the other side of the aisle, as in a plane. However, the seating is more like first class in an airliner: very comfy, and yes, you can go spend as much time as you like in the diner and lounge car. If...

    Summer Travel Plans

will be in New York City (flying there from the Middle East) on June 22nd for four days; then the Three Rivers (my first time on this train) to Chicago. Then the CZ to Omaha. Anyone in New York City at the same time?

    amtrak unimpressive.

HI Bsmith, Sorry the trip wasnt a good one. That's a bummer considering Amtrak sleepers ain't cheap. I think my rides on Amtrak (though there were problems!) was so good was that I went into it with such low expectations. Plus I'd ridden on Serbian trains. My god, how awful. Like the rest, I...

We are back from our first trip

hey gary, sorry bout the neg experience. I've had a couple like that myself, though fortunately others were great. Goes back to what I've said, Amtrak needs to shed the losers! In a way, IF George War Bush dismantles Amtrak (I hope not!) at least maybe then under private ownership they can fire...

    help 1st time

you'll love it! The coach seating on Amtrak trains (the coaches I've been on) are the same as first class seating on Alitalia airlines (believe me, I've done both). Lounge car loads of fun. Happy travels
