Doors didn't open (an Amtrak story...) :)

My experience on the LSL last week had similar vibes... The Conductor seemed to take pride in speaking as fast as he could when making announcements about station stops, doors, attendants, etc. As I was going end to end it did not concern me to not understand his spiel, but I noticed several...

    Lake Shore Limited discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024

I experienced the opposite journey just this last week. I was in coach, all that was offered were tiny bottles of water, given out to each passenger. No passengers received any food aboard the bus, but whether we were all "coach" passengers or mixed, I couldn't say. We called at each station en...

Which US airlines do you recommend for domestic service?

As the originator of this thread, I thought I would give my thoughts on the three airlines that I used on my recent trip to America. First up was American, flying from Boston to Chicago. They made the last boarding group, of which I was one, leave their "carry on" bags to go in the hold, and...

    USA Rail Pass questions

Have you taken multi day Amtrak train trips? I would recommend folk to "get a feel" for a long distance overnight ride before booking a very extended rail pass trip. My thinking about food aboard the train is not to be too "fixed" on getting my regular foods, and accept that some "less healthy"...

    USA Rail Pass questions

A few years ago, one could purchase an Amtrak rail pass that was valid for 15 days, or 30 days, and you could take as many Amtrak coach rides as you could fit into that 15 days. No "segment" rules, you just made your bookings and set off. I used that pass several times on my visits to America...

Amtrak Dining and Cafe Service discussion 2024 H2

Shame there is no way to rely in advance of boarding on these things being available. No worries, I always bring my travel kettle on my trips.

Amtrak Dining and Cafe Service discussion 2024 H2

Is there any Amtrak published information about the cafe car providing hot water to passengers? I mean, is it available on request, or just down to the employee who is serving to decide?

    Amtrak bustitution discussion

I have experienced two bus bridges / bustitutions. The first, back in 2004, was on my very first Amtrak tour. Booking the Texas Eagle between Los Angeles and Chicago, in sleeper, we were late into San Antonio, and the main train had already departed. We were bused up to Dallas to catch it from...

New Orleans or Houston to Palm Springs

The US car rental firms are well used to foreign people renting cars, in my experience. The law there also seem to have no problems issuing tickets to foreigners for speeding, I found... ;) I have driven thousands of miles on some of the most enjoyable, scenic road trips, stateside. To be...

Little incursion into Ukraine Summer '24

Thanks for a great write up, the photo's and the detailed information and explanations make me really feel I was there too! Is graffiti seen much in Poland, everywhere looks fairly well cared for?

Little incursion into Ukraine Summer '24

Thanks for a detailed look at train travel between Poland and Ukraine in current times. Surprisingly to me, given the background situation, things seem fairly relaxed, although the extra careful border control from Ukraine back into Poland might say otherwise? Nice to see you posting again!

First time Zephyr + Starlight, Surfliner, Ventures, Metra, and United

Thanks for a very detailed report, I can tell you definitely love trains! I guess we have all met staff on our travels who behave unkindly, for whatever reason. Maybe just having to do the same type of work day after day does not suit some staff? A shame when that happens, as I feel that...

    Lake Shore Limited discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024

Following on from the bustitution change to my LSL from Boston to Chicago, I cancelled my ticket, but lost 25% of the fare paid. Not fair in my opinion, as I had been offered, and paid for, an all train ride. I emailed Amtrak, and it looks like being a slow process to resolution: "Dear EDWIN...

    The Southern Museum - Atlanta

That French wagon seems a bit of a strange gift? Any reason why they gave something with no windows. I Like the notice, 40 men, 8 horses. :D

    Lake Shore Limited discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024

Oh, there are many more! "Finding life a strain? You are booking Amtrak again!" "Book an Amtrak train to really experience that travel pain" "We make your journey untenable, but still charge you 25% when you cancel"

    Lake Shore Limited discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024

I am not sure myself about the dates of line work, I know both the outward to Chicago on 4th, and the return on the 22 September are both with bus between Albany and Boston. No matter, I am flying to Chicago from Boston, but will take the train and bus connection on the way back.

    Lake Shore Limited discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024

Sadly, I realised today that I didn't relish that bustitution on the LSL from Boston after all. A bit too soon after arriving in the USA just the day before. I cancelled my ticket, but lost 25% of the fare paid. Not a major amount, but I still feel it is wrong. Not many firms can get away with...
