    Re-nationalisation of British Rail

No real idea about that. The current finances of the country are pretty stretched, from what the new Labour govt. have said, so I guess it will take a while before money for that appears, if at all. Just my guess.

    Re-nationalisation of British Rail

I don't think trains might replace personal cars, but maybe they could replace some airline routes. The cities are pollution hotspots, so a better commuter rail system might reduce car use. I think the expression global warming is fairly correct, in that the earth is warming up across the board...

Looking forward to reading about the rest of the adventure!

    Re-nationalisation of British Rail

The video above does seem to outline issues pretty well. Given that there are several privatised train operating companies (TOC's) that have failed, and their services are now run by the government, it seems that some form of further "nationalisation" does makes sense. I worked for British...

    Pakistan's premier train: video

I am a big fan of Indian train travel, and recently viewed this Youtube video of a train ride in Pakistan. Security of foreigners seems to be an issue, so it's not on my bucket list...

    Chicago Union Station discussion

I understand that the lounge pass purchase options exclude coach passengers, I was just wondering if that had changed over the years? Having read the Rules and Regs in the link above, I see I would in any case be unwelcome in the lounges: "Attire and conduct of lounge customers and their...

    Chicago Union Station discussion

I notice from post 239 that it is possible to purchase a lounge pass if in possession of a same day business class ticket. Has this always been the case, I seem to remember that coach class could also buy a lounge pass in the past? I am quite happy to wait for my train anywhere, so long as I...

Los Angeles Union Station and environs

I always enjoyed passing through LA Union station. Love those huge hanging light fittings, and the 1930's style big seats in the waiting area, as well as the style of the external frontage. There was a nice little outside garden area with a small water feature to one side, I hope that remains...

Indeed, it seems they thumbed a ride with a truck after all, so you might well be right.

Contingencies for any cancellations in a heavily multi-segmented trip?

I am in a slightly similar situation, trying to be realistic and not overdo my natural urge to cram in train after train on my next visit stateside! I guess the longer your scheduled trip is for, the more chance, statistically of one element going wrong. As mentioned above, insurance makes...

    Baton Rouge, LA

I always enjoy hearing Janice Joplin's version of "Bobby McGee". It has the lines "Busted flat in Baton Rouge, waitin' for a train When I's feelin' near as faded as my jeans..." Interested to know when the Baton Rouge station closed, if it ever existed, or is this just "poetic licence" ?

Which US airlines do you recommend for domestic service?

Thanks all for your thoughts on same day arrival and departure at BOS airport. I am still "fine tuning" a few elements of my trip, but I will have to make decisions soon, before some current options get fully booked. 👍

Which US airlines do you recommend for domestic service?

I am well aware of the good advice about not expecting Amtrak LD to be on time, and not to book short connecting times for important trips. I am wondering about my flight back to Ireland the third week in September. I don't really know what to expect from the US weather in September, and I...

    A Tale of Two Cities

It is often the "last mile" that can be frustrating, trying to connect from one service to another, when neither seem to integrate their timetables or information. Happily, there is a bus that meets the Holyhead ferries at Dublin Port, and drops at the metro/bus/train station area in Dublin...

Many "hostels" offer private ensuite rooms as well as dorm beds, might be worth checking?

    Boston, MA

Interesting video. By coincidence I am arriving from Dublin into Boston airport early September. I have booked a night at the H.I. Boston hostel, fingers crossed, as for all hostels, for snore-free roommates! Is tea still available in Boston, or was it all dumped in the sea? Hope I...

    Amtrak delays 2023 H2 - 2024

I think it would be fairer to include the "reasons" behind any failures to provide the scheduled services? Have train consists been damaged by collisions, are trains not where they should be due to freight derailments, weather issues, etc etc.

    Trip Report to Whitefish, Montana

Nice trip report and photos, I enjoyed reading it. That "red jammer" bus looks very unusual, are they semi-original vehicles, or modern replicas?

Rail service and travel by rail in India and Bangladesh

Gosh, that design is certainly unexpected. I can't quite see where my usual Paharganj cheapo Delhi digs would be? Looks like the traffic has thinned out a lot too... ;) Seriously though, what is the main impetus for the modernisation? Is it for "train operating requirements", such as...

Rail service and travel by rail in India and Bangladesh

Indeed, I was meaning more to refer to the overall LD train travel experience in India. The platforms, the stalls, filming from the open doors as the train speeds along, as well as the onboard catering. I guess if one is a "Youtube" vlogger, showing everyday stuff is not going to attract so...
