Pennsylvanian (the train(s) and route) discussion

Regardless of the many differences in policing philosophy between the DA, many of his ADA’s, the USA’s, mayor, governor, president, Philly PD, Amtrak PD, Septa PD, and whoever else, I can promise you incarcerating people for pulling emergency brakes at low speed, causing minimal damage, because...

    Keystone Corridor discussion

Congrats on being one of the 450 affected Daily passengers! As I understand it standard intercity coach bus service will be provided from LNC-HAR and all intermediate stations. Amtrak personnel will “theoretically” assist with the transfer. At the least the conductors will make an announcement...

SEPTA plans to scrap Key Card fare collection to smartphone system

This whole project is such an embarrassment. They have sunk nearly a quarter billion dollars into that mess. It’s hugely glitchy. It was meant to debut in 2013. It finally came to full implementation over COVID. The old analog system was far from perfect, but for the time and money sunk into...

    Keystone Corridor discussion

This is actually common on new SEPTA RRD stations. The platform comes in “hollow” prefabricated sections. I think it is also cheaper. It’s very good to see the Commonwealth continue to invest in the route, even in a less than perfect ridership environment. Gunn was heroic in bringing the line...

Tracking FY 2024-25 Ridership and Finances

Per ASMAD, there were 26 frequencies on the NOL-ATL section in 2024, and 46 in 2020, To me that suggests greatly improved ridership per train.

Tracking FY 2024-25 Ridership and Finances

The January Monthly Performance Report is out. Again these are monthly, not YTD figures. Apologies for formatting issues. The following six routes are between 95%-100% of January FY 2020 ridership: Downeaster 97% (42,400-41,300) Illini/Saluki 95% (19,200-18,300) Cascades 99% (51,200-50,800)...

Alan Shaw NS CEO Proxy fight

I get the sense the FRA is starting to get really tired of the PSR racket. The chair of the STB apparently voiced unfavorable comments earlier last week. Congress and state legislatures are taking a look at things. It would be a shame if these guys take it over and then get beat over the head...

    Empire Builder discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024

In theory, it’s a five hour train ride to Pasco, but only a three and change hour drive. One would think it would be cheaper to have a van or arrange bus service. The hotel, food, loss of first class revenue, a issuance of “we’re sorry” vouchers, plus the loss of passengers’ goodwill, would seem...

Capitol Limited cancelled in both directions, 2/13/24

I was more thinking NYP, which is I believe a hard no. I figured you’d need to get there to deal with commissary and all that.

Capitol Limited cancelled in both directions, 2/13/24

If the Cap weren’t Superliner equipped that would likely be done. The Superliners can’t fit on the whole route of the Pennsylvanian.

Tracking FY 2024-25 Ridership and Finances

The Northeast Regional (NER) is adding trips with a new schedule effective 3/4, providing service along the Northeast Corridor (NEC).

Tracking FY 2024-25 Ridership and Finances

The New York funding is allocated across Empire West/Maple Leaf, Empire South, Ethan Allen Express, and Adirondack. The way that gets accounted for in the reports astonishes me.

    Acela discussion

If that is true, it’s the stupidest idea I’ve heard since the Class I’s tried to go to one man crews. You should have at least two conductors working a train on that length and ridership. Emergencies, disputes, and mechanical issues also happen.

Tracking FY 2024-25 Ridership and Finances

I noticed Regional trips were being added. They really seem to want to make a run at 10,000,000 this year. I think the Acela schedule is mostly done being grown at this point.

Tracking FY 2024-25 Ridership and Finances

I doubt Acela per passenger revenue is returning anytime soon. Business travel is still lackluster, reliability has fallen significantly, and the pre COVID fares were ridiculous, unless you were on Wall Street money. I think the better model will be attained when economy of scale improves with...

Tracking FY 2024-25 Ridership and Finances

I do the 12 months immediately prior to March 2020. Start of FY-Feb is from FY 20, March-end of FY is FY 19. That of course has a downside, but it was the closest I could track.

Tracking FY 2024-25 Ridership and Finances

December’s Monthly Performance Report is out. It was a mixed month showing, by and in large, a softening of gains made earlier in the year. YTD ridership system wide has fallen beneath the FY 2020 level, due to continued (and worsening) losses in California sinking the State Supported Business...

Checked baggage question for New York To Philadelphia trip

How this theoretically works is that Amtrak will carry bags between any two city pairs that offer the service, regardless of whether the train you are on carries baggage. Disclaimer: Amtrak employees are known to make up rules arbitrarily at any time. This has just been my experience. The bags...

    Acela 21 (Avelia Liberty) development, testing and deployment (2018 - 1Q 2024)

Maybe it is really the FB groups that dictate Amtrak’s management!
