    On the train to Lagos...

No, not Nigeria, it's just Portugal! Having forgone my visit to America a few months ago due to catching Covid, I have since treated myself to a fortnight in Turkey, and now just back from a very enjoyable sunny and warm two weeks in southern Portugal. Staying in Portimão, Algarve area, I took a...

    Newest Nightjet sleepers from Siemens

Gosh, Mark, the Seat 61 guy, gives a fully comprehensive guide to the train, where to eat before the journey, and how to buy your tickets. Fingers crossed now that the service is popular and successful... 🤞

    Newest Nightjet sleepers from Siemens

Having enjoyed many trips on the former German overnight trains, "City Night Line", it is good to see some revival of the Night Train concept. The way most folks travel in America by rail is very different to the European style, as is the Indian style, etc, etc. I have always been happy to share...

    Layover in Moynihan Train Hall?

Welcome to the forum! There seem to be many trains from Philadelphia direct to Boston without need for change, so maybe look at a different train option? There are overnight trains, such as Northeast Regional train 66, which departs Philly a few minutes after midnight, and arrives in Boston just...

Off duty pilot arrested for attempted sabotage

My point is simply that if the chap was not in the jumpseat in the first place, but in the passenger cabin, he would have been less of a danger, and that seems like a fact, not a "knee jerk reaction"? I will be looking to book my next flight soon anyway, so let's change the subject... ;)

Off duty pilot arrested for attempted sabotage

I get that these guys need to move around the system, but my point is that the airlines could provide regular passenger cabin seats for them, rather than allowing them cockpit access. That would cost airlines though, by removing some revenue generating seats from the public. I assume that off...

Off duty pilot arrested for attempted sabotage

I suppose one radical solution to this particular event would be not to allow "off duty crew" as passengers in the cockpit? I guess that would improve passenger safety, but it would affect the airlines profits, so not a realistic solution... I know that would not stop the actual pilot...

Questions about Train 11 (Coast Starlight) to Train 2 (Sunset Limited) connection

I believe it is essential to book the whole journey on one reservation, in order to get "guaranteed connection" status.

Innocent abroad - to Paris in 1969

So nice that your travels reveal you to be open minded and open hearted. Star qualities required, to be an "innocent abroad"... 👍

Off duty pilot arrested for attempted sabotage

"Most people aren't murderers..." Indeed, we should keep in mind that 99.999% of all our fellow human beings are ordinary folk, just like us. When we set out on our travels, live in the moment, enjoy it all, and not worry so much about "what could go wrong"...

To Gathering Sacramento to Chicago by #6 California Zephyr

It's been a few years now since I visited America, my September 2023 planned visit was derailed at the last moment due to covid. Looking at the menu card you posted, I don't see any individual prices shown? Is it just for sleeper passengers with included meals, or is the diner still open to...

Amtrak announces Simplified Fares coming soon

Isn't it annoying and sad, how the corporate self image of Amtrak, as shown in the "About Amtrak" section of the above item, is at such variance with the reality of the Amtrak american train experience in recent times? Quote: "For more than 50 years, Amtrak has connected America and modernized...

    Euro special diverted to Disneyland

I voted "remain", as an EU supporter, but one can see a certain amount of wry humour in that event...

    Las Vegas Monorail

I have often taken the "Deuce" bus service when in Las Vegas, but that is slow! I think mainly it seems that the folk trying to use the Deuce bus are simply not familiar with using a bus at all, more than the traffic density causing the delays. (The regular cross town buses seem to board...

    Saved by the SOB

Wow! It's great that you can think on your feet when things go awry! I appreciate your style of writing, with a good deal of witty humour in the mix too. I enjoyed a visit to Basle a few years back, interesting to enter part of the station in Germany, and exit in France!

The Pain Train, a British Rail film from 1969...

Many of the UK nationalised industries had their own film units, to make public information films, or films for staff training purposes. This "Pain Train" film is a training one, trying to show staff how seconds lost through inattention or silly errors will soon mount up. (Also quite...

An overview of Britain's HS2 high speed rail project

Honestly ! It's people like you, driving around in traffic, you should be setting an example by riding the trains... (just my little joke!) Maybe people are just pretending to work from home, and instead are going out and enjoying themselves, by riding around? (another joke attempt...) I am 100%...

An overview of Britain's HS2 high speed rail project

I do wonder if the need to add "extra capacity" is actually real, are not more people working from home these days? What are the costs of a conventional new line compared to high speed? I hope I am not just being a Luddite here, but 100 £Billion is a lot of cash for a 100 or so miles of new track?

An overview of Britain's HS2 high speed rail project

We have to keep in mind who makes Youtube videos. This channel seems to "love construction", so maybe not totally unbiased? It is good to shine a light on all the complications involved in such a major project, everything in life has a trade off of benefits and drawbacks. What seems "reasonable"...
