New train (40-41 Floridian) between Miami and Chicago via Washington DC

Back in legacy RR days there was a big demand for west coast Florida service from the Midwest. IMO switching Meteor to serve Tampa would be a mistake. What might be better is terminating the Palmetto at Tampa. Of course what would be even better is a connection at Lakeland for service to Ft...

    Amtrak partners with Google

Yes, Amtrak does need a new reservations system. Our computer gurus can tell us how expensive that it is going to be. Personal experience of more than one medical facility having changed systems give only a thumb nail observation. They had 2 complete computer displays and key boards. Trying...

NS Pearl River Drawbridge fails inspection.

This is a fairly old bridge . Last time drove by it on US011 seemed rather substandard. Amtrak cancellers Crescents south of ATL. Guess NS will have 2 reroutes. CSX to Mobile and SOU RR to Birmingham, Meridian to Jackson *KCS (and CN Jackson to NOL? Not sure about repairs but other site says...

    Amtrak delays 2023 H2 - 2024

Once again Amtrak says screw the passengers. NS Pearl rive draw has failed an inspection. Between Slidell and Picayune. Trains 19 (19/30) terminated at Meridian. Took 4 buses to carry passengers to New Orleans. Why Amtrak just cancelled 19 and 20 south of Atlanta. Now why not bus passengers...

Rail service and travel by rail in India and Bangladesh

IMO thast is what is needed in the USA. The situation with 'Russia and China make it likely that GPS might be shut down at least for civilian use if not completely shut down.

CLE / TOL - Orlando might be a high demand leg?

Major disaster for CSX and NS in the Appalachian mountain areas

Now at least one interstate to Asheville is now open. It is amazing I-26 from 'Spartanburg. That goes up the mountain just east of Saluda. This route was washed away many years ago just before paving by another hurricane. I would guess that anyone driving to Ashville area to locate missing...

New train (40-41 Floridian) between Miami and Chicago via Washington DC

I suspect that there may be more riders from Cleveland and Toledo (Detroit & Canadians).

Ideas for future trains between Florida and Midwest

IMO there may be more to running CHI <> ATL. Train counts, length of sidings, grades. It may be that a passenger train might do better switching RRs at Dalton. Who knows?. The best result might be having crews able to use either RR? Intermediate stations are also a thought. Dalton of course...

Modified Amtrak service due to Hurricane Helene

CSX "A" line reported by CSX to be out of service due to storm.

    Amtrak delays 2023 H2 - 2024

Despite all the rain Amtrak # 20(28) left NOL on time and only had one station arrival at 13 minutes late. Arrived early at ATL. However it is waiting probably for a crew due to no # 19 arrived ATL SAturday.

Major disaster for CSX and NS in the Appalachian mountain areas

Hurricane Helene has delt both RRs severe damages. 1. CSX ex Clinchfield RR probably near wipe out in Erwin. Unconfirmed reports several wash out on to Bostic. The water in Erwin even flooded hospital. 2. NS from Bulls gap on to Newport (dam failure) along US25 reports still coming in on...

Modified Amtrak service due to Hurricane Helene

Agree. Since Helene tracked farther east than originally predicted those trees are really making a mockery of any rail service. My CSX freight route has not had any trains since sometime yesterday afternoon. I can see a few trees across the tracks here with heavy pine tree locations elsewhere...

Tracking FY 2024-25 Ridership and Finances

Septa: Appreciate your efforts. What would really be interesting is if the ridership figures also listed the number of sold out legs for each train. That number would be veery embarrassing to Amtrak and expect that it would make major effort to hide that number. Maybe some of our posters...

Cathay Pacific launching Dallas to Hong Kong, carrier’s new longest route

Have to wonder if this flight will only operate during cooler weather. It may be that the aircraft will only be able to take off max take off weight at cooler temps. This is just speculation as I do not know the performance specifications. Runway length should be no problem.

The Crescent should have operated NYP <> CLT.

    Amtrak Timetables

Here is what a non railfan might do with a timetable. My train is going thru XYZ where aunt goldilocks lives. I can tell her that I am going thru on Amtrak AA at O dark thirty and would like to speak to her for the 15 minute station stop. Now would anyone know that the stated train stops at...

New train (40-41 Floridian) between Miami and Chicago via Washington DC

Coach passengers should be able to prepay for meals when buying transportation. Meals non refundable. Left over sleeper meals not used should also be sold to coach passengers probably last serving of each meal.

And where is the Star refueled? Certainly, will not refuel at the platform in WASH.

    Amtrak Timetables

RR timetables are by their nature are not like airline timetables. No airline operates anymore between more than 3 - 4 stations. But it is completely differently with 10 or more stops at all times of the day and night. When will Amtrak management stop treating its passengers as just bodies to...
