MBTA (Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority) discussion

This logic doesn't make any sense. It would seem that, by every measure, someone from the outside coming in and effectively saying "you all suck, shut it down" would be a much worse outcome than MBTA leaders basically owning up to what everybody in the entire Boston region (and any transit...

AGR FNBO Credit Card discussion 2023 H2 -2024

Maybe I’m not understanding this, but how would scratching the numbers off your card have any effect on someone making fraudulent charges if they didn’t physically have your card in the first place?

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022 - 2024Q1)

I find it interesting that he thinks this is somehow a good idea: So...spend 60% of the cost of a new car to get 10 years of use (or, to put it another way, spend less than twice the cost of refurbishing an old car and get four times the lifespan out of it).

    Modifying/canceling a reservation

You can rebook more or less whenever you want before your original trip, but there has to be availability on the trains you’re changing to. If the trains are sold out, it won’t matter if it’s two days or two months before your trip. I’d be more concerned about that.

NS PTC failure on 8/28/23 affecting all NS routes

I was on 352. We departed 30 minutes late after what the crew called “mechanical issues” on the PA (though a friend of mine said NS was having server problems). We made it to Lumber Street and sat for about 30 minutes before they backed us up to Roosevelt to clear the way for other trains...

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022 - 2024Q1)

I don’t expect anything major to be done with the Viewliner 1s. The plan to reconfigure them to be similar to the V2s was dropped, supposedly due to the high complexity of the work that would be involved (apparently the sleeper modules aren’t that “modular” after all). The best we can likely...

    Hiawatha discussion

As of today, only one of the sets has a cabbage, with the other having two engines. I’d actually be surprised if they manage to keep two cabbages running on this route. Heck, I’m half surprised they have even one.

    Hiawatha discussion

The cabbages have been on and off over the past few months, having made a limited return after being gone for most of the pandemic. I think they were supposed to be back on a “permanent” basis a couple months ago (with the wifi-enabled cafe car coming off), but then new mechanical problems...

    Select Tier Challenge

Does AGR still have a limit on the number of qualifying/points earning trips one can do in a single day? I recall some time back there was a four-segment limit to discourage people from stacking cheap multi-city trips together on certain high-frequency routes when there were was a minimum...

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022 - 2024Q1)

The RFP is supposed to be issued this year. The order will take longer. For reference, the RFP to replace the Amfleets was issued in January 2019, and the Airo fleet was ordered in 2021.

    CTA Ventra

The machines should be able to sell a non-reloadable ticket if you don’t want to spend the money to buy a card. If you have a smart-phone with tap-to-pay technology, you can also download the Ventra app and have a Ventra card stored in your phone’s wallet. However, I don’t know offhand if that...

Adirondack June '23 cancellation, and September restoration, state of Upstate NY service

No, because the Adirondack never went to Toronto. It went to Montreal.

    New route in Northern California

Perhaps in someone’s fantasy world. Even if Caltrain stuck with their current fleet, there is zero chance any commuter operator would ever entertain hooking sleepers to the back of their train and dragging the consist down the railroad.

    Suluki/Illini consist

The remodeling into a cafe was done decades ago (1980s or 90s?). At that time, there wasn’t any consideration for having business class. Even now, roping off half the car and calling it “business class” is a makeshift solution. The plan for when they get the stupid equipment restrictions...

    Empire Builder service disruption

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that the lights (on the train) aren't the problem. In broad daylight, a train is plenty visible on its own, provided that sight lines aren't obstructed. But the number of drivers out there that have no awareness of anything beyond their own noses is a...

Travel from Vancouver to San Diego advice?

The problem I see is that, generally, folks who want to travel to/from Vancouver, WA, know the difference, whereas those wanting to travel from Vancouver, BC, might not. More folks are likely to want to travel from Vancouver, BC, and you're less likely to notice the absence of some kind of...

    Amtrak Siemens Charger locomotive (SC44, ALC42, ALC42E) (2015 - 1Q 2024)

“On the ground” is simply railroad speak for derailed. Technically, the Coast Starlight last week was “on the ground” even if all the cars were basically upright and in line.

Hotels near Rail Transit and Commuter Rail

Just so there’s no confusion, the line on the map above, while colored green, is the Metra BNSF commuter line, NOT the CTA Green Line. Headways on that route, particularly off-peak, are going to be on the order of once per hour or so.

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022 - 2024Q1)

I disagree. Fleet commonality is way overblown. Granted, you don’t want variety just for the hell of it, but there are very good reasons to have bi-level cars on routes that can accommodate them (assuming the ADA issue can be satisfactorily resolved). There are more LD routes that can use...

Amtrak "Contest" to Win Free Amtrak Trips (Beware of scam)

Yep. I browsed through a few comments before posting. Half the comments had the exact same picture of their "Amtrak card."
