Relative safety of planes, trains and automobiles

That very same link has total fatalities on the same table, just to the right of the number of fatal accidents. Each of those accidents only claimed 1 life (so, 2 total fatalities).

    Southwest Chief derailment (June 2022)

No, it doesn’t. Derailment is literally correct. That is what happened. The train is not on the rails. It derailed. It in no way, other than your own attempt at interpretation, implies cause.

Blunt message from NY MTA boss

I generally support socialist ideas such as the one you mention here. Those with the means should have a greater obligation to pay than those without. This is, however, very different from the idea that people in Montana are subsidizing New York City.

Environmental Research paper help: Could we extend the Auto-Train to Chicago, Boston, Montreal and New York?

The question of environmental benefits overlooks the reality of induced demand. Whenever you increase roadway capacity, traffic just increases to fill it up, negating any benefit to the increase in capacity. Offering an Auto Train to take cars off the road just opens up that capacity for other...

Blunt message from NY MTA boss

New York State is the largest “donor” state in terms of money paid to the federal government in taxes vs. federal spending received. Montana receives more in federal spending than they pay in taxes. So…you might want to try again on that argument.

Boeing to move headquarters to Arlington,VA.

Airbus was the first to make a fully fly-by-wire commercial plane. The technology had existed and was in use on some military applications long before then, and even had limited commercial applications before Airbus introduced it on the A320.

Boeing to move headquarters to Arlington,VA.

Far, far more planes have crashed because there wasn’t a computer to protect the pilots from themselves, than have crashed specifically because the computer did something it wasn’t supposed to do. In fact, more planes have crashed because pilots didn’t understand what the computer was designed...

    Compensation for Amtrak Cancellation

I'll agree that last minute cancellations and downgrades should be subject to more than just a simple refund of the fare difference, given the difficulty of making alternative plans last minute. But if we're going to start whining about "emotional stress" and "human suffering" because a...

Comparison of Amtrak vs. other transport mode

I would question that. Unless we’re talking a schedule change done weeks in advance, major airlines don’t “simply” cancel a flight because there weren’t enough people on it on the day of departure. The logistics of getting equipment and crews in place (especially for a carrier like Southwest...

MKE to BOS - Save money by booking separate legs?

Hiawatha has been reserved since the start of the pandemic.

    Chicago Union Station arrival times

As far as I have seen, the Transit app will not show arrivals. Its intended purpose is to help folks know where/when to board a particular transit vehicle, so trains arriving/terminating at a station won’t show up unless you check the status from a station further upline to check the travel time.

Resumption of Amtrak service to Canada (2022-2023 Q2)

How is there “no viable way to comprehend”? There’s a nationwide staffing shortage affecting almost every industry. Everybody had more optimistic staffing projections in February than reality is turning out to support. I’m definitely not saying Amtrak made all the right decisions a couple of...

Resumption of Amtrak service to Canada (2022-2023 Q2)

Because running Seattle to Bellingham requires the same number of Amtrak crews as running to Vancouver.

Some WMATA train operators not compliant, removed from service

Arguably the most mismanaged large transit agency in the US with yet another fail: https://www.reuters.com/world/us/washington-subway-system-will-temporarily-remove-some-trains-operators-2022-05-15/

    Overnight on the Chicago El

If I was already on the Blue Line and was headed to Union Station, I would absolutely do that (provided I didn’t need an escalator/elevator). If I’m downtown and not already on the Blue Line, I wouldn’t. There’s really no reason to add an extra 3/4 mile walk, or a transfer to a bus on Adams...

Amtrak long term service cancellations and restorations (2022-2023H1)

How many should they be hiring? Further, how do you know each of those job postings in Seattle translates to exactly one employee?

Amtrak long term service cancellations and restorations (2022-2023H1)

Wait…trying to hire people when they’re short-staffed is a sign of incompetence?

    Overnight on the Chicago El

There are a few key issues, some of which are general societal issues, some specific to CTA, and some which are specific to the Blue Line. I’m not going to go into the societal problems, except to say that things have been headed this way for a long time (even when things appeared to be...
