    Coast Starlight discussion

Looking at the last two departures from Seattle it looks like they're back to sleepers at the front of the train? Wonder what the rationale is for changing, and changing back?

    Coast Starlight discussion

Is the removal of business class cars another equipment shortage?

How much of the Amtrak map has one covered?

That is pretty darn cool, and colour me a bit jealous!

    Amtrak Cascades Service discussion

Is the period maintenance backlog from employee shortages? Other? A shame to have more equipment at play and see it get parked despite demand existing.

    Amtrak Cascades Service discussion

I assume the onramping of Ventures is still going very slowly? It seems like there should be a pretty healthy supply of single level equipment becoming available?

Coast Starlight hits truck in Ventura County CA, partially derails (6/28/23)

Did service start getting restored today? I am not Amtrak-literate enough to figure it out! And I can't access Twitter where it seems like Amtrak posts the updates?

    VIA New Corridor Trains - 2021 - 2024 Updates

We are currently booked in 2A & B and 3A & B so, hypothetically we're split even both front and rear facing!

    VIA New Corridor Trains - 2021 - 2024 Updates

Interesting, and thanks for sharing. Weird times for Via, keeping equipment holding on awaiting the new train sets. Seems like we are close to potential service restoration, generally speaking, in the corridor and Quebec - but does the equipment exist? I've never ridden the corridor, and am...

    VIA New Corridor Trains - 2021 - 2024 Updates

Did this come true? Was also curious, how many "train sets" does the Corridor currently need to operate?

    VIA Preference 2.0 (Probable Devaluation)

I also just figured out today I have a boatload of points from only two trips; however, being the genius I am this dawned on me four hours after booking a significant trip. Happily I'm within the 24 hours, and was able to rebook at a $300 savings (about 20% off!), pretty cool for points I didn't...

    VIA New Corridor Trains - 2021 - 2024 Updates

I just read on Facebook, so quality of source unknown, that the Renaissance equipment is done on the Corridor tomorrow. Is it the new trains replacing the two Ren sets, or is there enough LRC HEP stuff kicking around?

Are Sleeper Class discounts gone for good?

Thanks for that! April 2024, so a ways out 😂 It's our wedding so I'm trying to spread the expenses a bit!

Are Sleeper Class discounts gone for good?

I didn't want to start a new thread for my somewhat silly question / observation. But I am booking my family from Toronto to Halifax. Business on the corridor, and I want two renaissance rooms on the Ocean because our young child is a (figurative) giant. I am assuming when I get the quote for...

    Canadian "Buffer Cars" discussion

I did not realize that the RDCs at White River were also effected, and that the trains there had been on a significantly diminished capacity as a result. This change will be be most positively felt there, I suspect, as for the other trains it was merely an aesthetic concern, and I suppose some...

Siemens Caltrans/IDOT Venture design, engineering, testing and delivery (2012-1Q 2024)

Interesting video: I think the conclusion is a bit silly, "it's hard to see why Amtrak continues to invest in seemingly unreliable trains." On the surface that might be a reasonable comment, but Siemens is a very successful and reliable equipment provider around the world. Issues seem to be...

    Empire Builder discussion

No, the Via Charger hasn't missed service yet. There was one day the train set was down, but that was a venture cab car issue. However, Via only runs the set one day a week, so experience is pretty limited.

New Venture Cars To Chicago Today? (3/27/23)

I look forward to their entry into service, June 2026.

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022 - 2024Q1)

Here's the 2019 Annual Report which does an okay breakdown: https://media.viarail.ca/sites/default/files/publications/2019%20VIA%20RAIL%20AR_ENGLISH.pdf Naturally 2020 and 2021 were a lil weird. Financials are also broken down on their annual meeting, available on YouTube. They're long and...

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022 - 2024Q1)

And in the Via Rail case that income from super-premium fares pays the bill almost entirely for Canadian service to continue; it was a important move to keep the train even running a few governments ago when Via was facing significant austerity. The question now is what this looks like going...
